I was in the company of two friends, both of them hunters, who saw exactly the same thing. We live in Grandola, and hunt wild boar for sport in Serra de Grandola and Santiago do Cac'em. I have been hunting for nearly 30 years and never saw anything like it.

It was already past midnight and we were on our way back home when we say a light that we could not explain. It was a very quiet night, moonlit night, and ideal for hunting.

We became tired of waiting for wild boar to appear, so we decided to return home - one of my companions had to work on Saturday. We walked for some twenty minutes back to where we left our vehicle. This must have been around half past midnight or one o'clock in the morning, more or less. We got the car going and set off on the return trip, driving past Santa Margarida da Serra.

A few kilometers ahead on the road there is a tight, elbow-type curve before the straight segment that leads to Santiago do Cac'em Grandola, and it was exactly after taking that curve that we saw a very bright light above the trees and pine groves in the road's median strip.

Blinded by the light, I slowed down and pulled over to the shoulder. The three of us got out to get a better look at the light. We weren't able to see any figures, just a light some 20 meters long, with an elongated shape.

The light flew very slowly to our right, passing over the pine groves at the summit of the mountain range where were stopped. We weren't frightened; just amazed by the inhospitable presence of that light.

One of my companions said that it was a firefighting helicopter that monitored the mountain range on account of the forest fires. However, we decided that it couldn't be a helicopter, as there was no engine sound to be heard.

A few meters head from us, a car pulled over and a military man from the GNR, known to us, emerged. He saw the same thing and spoke with us about what we had seen.

We remained there for a good 10 minutes, looking at the light. The military man phoned someone to discuss what we were seeing at the moment - I suspect he was talking to his base! At that point, one of my friends remembered [the existence of] a fire tower whose staff could well be seeing the same thing. The light vanished slowly into the mountain range, and me and my friends returned home, amazed. I believe the soldier followed the object. He was very curious about it, and it was he who recorded the object on his cellphone. Our own were turned off at the moment, and we didn't even think about cellphones at the time.

Meanwhile, some days went by, and I happened to mention the event to some fellow hunters without mentioning the word UFO. I never believed in such things, until I saw one. I was impresses with what other hunters told me, swearing that they had seen lights that they at first took for helicopters, but made no engine sound whatsoever.

I've been a hunter for many years, and I've seen shooting stars, meteorites and all those natural things. But what we saw on the night of 31 August goes beyond anything I've known in my life. I served in the Navy and never knew of a helicopter that didn't make an engine noise. Such a thing doesn't exist. I am aware of many new technologies in contemporary military aircraft.

I'm convinced that the fire fighters on duty in the Grandola tower also saw the light. It was a very large object; not seeing it was impossible. My hunting companions and I still wonder what that light was. We have gone hunting in the same area again, but haven't seen it again. The oddest detail is that when we now lie in wait while hunting, I'm constantly looking at the sky, like someone who expects to see something that surreal all over again.

After undergoing an experience like this one, not knowing whether it was a UFO or not, my notions about these objects have changed significantly. I would like to say that I saw a UFO, but I can't say for sure, as all I saw was a light. A light I'd never seen in my life. I'll send you a drawing of our position with regard to the light. On the Internet, my son found an image that resembles what we saw. It was at my son's insistence that I am sharing the sighting - it's not the usual topic of conversation for a coffee shop. These are the most identical objects to Earth that we have discovered yet," stated Justin Crepp, assistant professor of physics at the University of Notre Dame.

Crepp initially saw a dot near Kepler-62 about a year ago, and has investigated the movements of the system for months in order to confirm the discovery.

A third possibly habitable planet, Kepler 69c, is on the "inner edge of what has been considered to be the habitable zone," said Thomas Barclay, Kepler scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Sonoma, California.

Veteran Ufologist Richard Hall Succumbs To Cancer

Dick was born on December 25, 1930, in Hartford, Connecticut; in 1949, realizing that war was forthcoming, he spent two years with the newly borne Air Force, followed by six years in the Air Force Reserve. After his service he took odd jobs and moved around a bit, until landing at Tulane University, (New Orleans) in 1954. He initially majored in mathematics and then switched to philosophy.The hub-bub about Flying Saucers in the early 50's got Dick's attention, and he joined the then recently formed NICAP organization. He would become life long friends with its Director, and another UFO icon, Donald E. A Few Words On Chinese Lanterns

Chinese Lanterns. They are clouding the waters of UFO investigation. The reporting sites of NUFORC, MUFON, and others are full of UFO reports that clearly describe the experience of viewing Chinese Lanterns in the night sky.

The reports are rampant, from all over North America, and elsewhere. You Tube has countless "UFO" videos which clearly display Chinese Lanterns. In my opinion, it has become a plague. You can bet that almost any report of orange, yellow, or white lights seemingly moving in formation slowly through the night sky, at times with a slight flicker... are in almost every case... clearly Chinese Lanterns. These false reports are clogging up the reporting web sites, taking investigators precious time, and flooding media sites with articles and video clips of so called "UFO Armada's" and "Orange Orb UFO's in formation" etcetera etcetera.

I don't expect every person in North America to be able to identify Chinese Lanterns in the sky, especially if they are unaware that they even exist. The issue I have is that the individuals who are responsible for publishing these sightings, and administering the reporting sights need to classify these sightings, as they should be able to identify the characteristics of Chinese Lanterns and should be fully aware of their presence in our skies. They need to be talked about more. There is little discussion about the Lanterns and the problems they pose to investigators.

Lanterns are becoming very popular, and the use of them will increase as they become even more readily available. There needs to be more education on this subject. The reporting organizations need to post educational articles on their sites explaining the characteristics of Chinese Lanterns, complete with images and video of Lanterns for the sake of illustration and comparison. This information needs to be disseminated to the potential reporting masses, but most importantly, all of the investigators, researchers, and students of Ufology need to be educated on Chinese Lanterns. It will assist in the weeding out of the 95% of explainable sightings, and allow us more time to investigate the ever important 5%.

I have always said, and frequent readers know, that I have always said that there are factions within our governments and world governments that know much more about aliens, UFO's and life on other planets....much more than they are telling the masses. The masses are you and I buddy.....

According to the "news" they have appointed a Malaysian astrophysicist to be ready to jump in and make nice with aliens when said aliens decide to make contact with us.

Is this true? "Fox News "says that the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs...which I didn't know existed until now, says this is simply not true, they have no mandate for appointing anyone to meet and greet the aliens upon their arrival. It seems that actually Mazlan Othman is scheduled to give a presentation about 'space debris" at a conference in England. The conference is scheduled for next week, so let's see what actually it's all about at that time.

According to their website, the Royal Society is: "a fellowship of 1400 outstanding individuals who represent all areas of science, engineering and medicine and who form a global scientific network of the highest calibre. It exists to expand knowledge,support science and guide policy in the UK, the Commonwealth and all over the world.

Interesting though, the Royal Society does have a conference planned for October 4 and 5, 2010, to discuss "a scientific and societal agenda on extra-terrestrial life. Their website indicates this panel will be discussing plans for future generations to detect extra-terrestrial life, as well as a discussion about the societal affects of such a discovery....much like I mentioned above...getting the people ready....at least that is how I read it. It actually sounds like an interesting discussion, one that we should follow perhaps. In the confirmed list of panelists I did see the name "Mazlan Othman "However there isn't any mention of appointing an "ambassador for extra terrestrials"

As I was saying, no matter what the outcome here, there does seem to be something happening below the surface so to speak, when it comes to UFO's that has me always wondering who knows what and what are they not telling us? Whoever "They" is......But this stuff becomes exceptionally cloudy with the internet speculation, false reports and conspiracy theories, not that I condemn that, far from it, just that it is difficult these days to sort fact from fiction and we always need to check our sources and read between the lines when necessary.

I believe if the Royal Society, a self described group of "outstanding individuals who represent all areas of science, engineering and medicine" can find it in their interests to be discussing what we need to know if aliens arrive, then I also believe there must be some validity to the possibility of that happening, perhaps sooner rather than later. I know that these are pretty lofty thinkers, but let's face it, if they are discussing it, there has to be some merit. I doubt they spend much time discussing foolishness...Of course you and I know that UFO's exist, that we have been visited by extra terrestrials and that our governments know about it, and in fact, don't want us to know, at least not yet. We know that there are many things in the universe and beyond that we don't understand, so the idea, the possibility of a visit from someplace else, is not only possible it's very likely at some point...."when" is the only question.....

One final note, as far as it goes, I somehow doubt that if aliens do turn up, somehow I doubt that "the world powers" are just going to say, Let the UN's UFO Ambassador handle it.....

UFOs, Time Slips, Other Realms and the Science of Fairies, by Edwin Sidney Hartland; additional material by Tim Beckley, Sean Casteel, Brent Raynes and Tim R. Swartz, on UFO Digest by Sean Casteel. The book sounds intriguing and I'm ordering it right away. The book deals with the issue of ET vs. "fairy" or rather, terrestrial entities we assume or interpret as ET. As Casteel writes:

... there is another interpretation, one which, while it is taken quite seriously by premiere UFO researchers like Jacques Vallee, remains a definite minority point of view: What if what we are witnessing and experiencing actually originates on Earth and has been here throughout mankind's struggle to understand the strange environment he finds himself thrust into? Are the diminutive gray aliens so frequently claimed to have visited hapless mortals as they lay abed really just a variation on millennia of old folklore about fairies, changelings, elves and other forms of wee people?

That is the primary thrust of this 2008 release from Global Communications, called "UFOs, Time Slips, Other Realms and the Science of Fairies." The bulk of the book is a reprint of a much older book by Edwin Sidney Hartland, in which he offers a wonderful overview of the folklore of fairies and other mysterious creatures that frequently cross over from their shadowy dimension to enter ours.

This is Vallee territory (among others) as well of course, and I don't disagree. But I acknowledge I have a bias for the reality of ET as well, and I don't see why the explanation needs to be an either/or one. Isn't it possible there are at least two concurrent reasons for phenomena like this, one being literal extraterrestrials from outer space (whether from our own solar system or beyond)? It's also possible one manipulates the other for our benefit -- in order to deceive, which is one characteristic of the phenomena. There's also a symbiotic relationship between us and "them," -- all of "them" -- whoever "they" are, of course.

AMHERST - It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... who knows?

That may be the question on many minds in Amherst, where numerous people reported seeing a UFO flying low over parts of town Tuesday around 6 p.m.

"It was like something out of a movie," said Kathryn McGill of Amherst, who said she spotted the mysterious object in the area of the old landfill on Belchertown Road. "I just thought, 'That shouldn't be there.'"

McGill said her friends laughed at her when she told the story later that night, but she's not alone. Wednesday on Facebook pages and a blog called Head in the Clouds Amherst, locals reported seeing a silent aircraft pass low over Amherst, Pelham and in the area of the Connecticut River.

No crop circles or abductions were reported, and the area's cows seem to be doing just fine, Amherst police said.

Police said they received one call about "lights in the sky" in South Amherst around that time, but they didn't investigate. Westover Air Reserve Base officials, who oversee a radar tower in Amherst, said they have nothing in their logs about any aircraft moving through the area at the time.

McGill, 19, said she was driving to a friend's house on Belchertown Road when she saw something out of the corner of her eye. She looked up to see a "large aircraft" moving steadily across the sky, about 75 to 100 feet above her car.

"There were four or five cars ahead of me and everyone just stopped and looked at it," she said. "I rolled down my window, but I couldn't hear anything."

She said that within 10 seconds, the mystery object had disappeared behind the treeline. "I had an idea that I should take a photo, but by the time I thought of it, it was gone," she said.

The object was about the size of two or three cars, she estimated, and was roughly diamond-shaped. "But not a perfect diamond," she said. "In between the points it was kind of rounded."

It was dark at the time, but she could see the object because it had fairly dim white lights.

"It was unnerving," she said. "It kept the same perfect pace - it wasn't spinning or anything."

McGill said she is "not the kind of person that believes in this sort of thing," so she thought maybe there was a reasonable explanation for it.

"It was so large and low, I was sure I saw some kind of aircraft that had fallen and was going to crash," she said. When she got to her friend's house, she looked on the Internet to see if there was any news about some kind of military craft crashing in Amherst, but there was nothing.

When it disappeared, she immediately called her sister and her friends, telling them what she saw.

Later that night, McGill's mother took a drive over to the old landfill to see what her daughter was talking about. McGill said her mother, as well as another friend of hers, said they saw planes circling the area over the landfill, as though they were looking for something.

Northampton resident Beth Maciorowski was getting into her sister's car in downtown Amherst at around 6:30 p.m. when they both stopped to watch what she described as a triangular flying object moving silently across the sky.

"We were in my sister's car in the parking lot across from La Veracruzana and saw the thing come up over the building," Maciorowski said Wednesday. At first, she assumed it was a plane. "But it seemed way too bizarre for it to be flying so low. It was moving pretty slowly, too," she said.

"The strangest thing was how quiet it was," she said. "If a plane was flying that low, there's no doubt we would really be able to hear it."

She said it was triangular, but she couldn't see many more details. "As it flew over us, I tried to get a quick glimpse and just noticed quite a few lights," she said. "It flew over the common toward where the Lord Jeff is, in that direction."

She and her sister were left "dumbfounded" by the experience, Maciorowski said.

At Westover Air Reserve Base, Lt. Col. James Bishop said that the base's tower in Amherst would have observed any aircraft traveling in the area, but could have missed an object if it was close to the ground.

He said the command post controller reported that there was nothing in the logs around 6 p.m., but the controller added that while driving through Westfield at around that time, she observed "something flying really low."

"She thought it was maybe a low plane, like a Cessna," Bishop said.

On Nov. 29, 2012, a few people reported seeing a triangular aircraft with lights flying over the Andover and Tewksbury area, according to the Mutual UFO Network, which logs reported sightings.

According to the National UFO Reporting Center's database, five UFO sightings have been reported in Amherst in the last 27 years.

McGill said she wouldn't be surprised to find out that the object she saw in the Amherst sky was otherworldly because it was like nothing she'd ever seen before.

"I've been joking that I'm going to have to join a support group for people who've seen UFOs, because everyone's just been laughing at me," she said. "I know it wasn't a plane."

Writing in the peer-reviewed Astrobiology journal, the team has outlined three main goals for a future mission. The first is to investigate Europa's non-ice material from at least two different depths to understand its detailed composition of salts, organic materials and other contaminants. A secondary focus is geophysical mapping of Europa to probe the satellite's ice shell and ocean, through seismology and magnetometry- a technique of measuring patterns of magnetism in the soil. Finally, the scientists hope a spacecraft on Europa will allow them to characterise the surface geology at a human scale. 'Landing on Europa and touching its surface is a visionary goal of planetary science,' said Robert Pappalardo, PhD of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 'This is a difficult technical challenge that is probably many years away. 'Understanding the key scientific questions to be addressed by a future Europa lander helps us to focus on the technologies required to get us there.' In March, scientists detailed the strongest evidence yet that salty water from the huge liquid ocean beneath Europa's frozen surface actually makes its way to the moon's surface - reinforcing suggestions that there could be life on Europa. Europa is a geological wonderland, with a wide variety of surface features. While much was learned from Galileo observations shown, it is still not understood how most of these features form, or their implications for Europa's evolution.The research suggested there was a chemical exchange between the ocean and surface, making the ocean a richer chemical environment. The report was compiled by Professor Mike Brown, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, and Kevin Hand from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in Pasaden. The exchange between the ocean and the surface, Professor Brown said, 'means that energy might be going into the ocean, which is important in terms of the possibilities for life there.' The scientists also believe the composition of Europa's ocean may closely resemble the salty ocean of Earth. A mission could map the geology of Europa to probe its ice shell and ocean. Blue contours show radiation intensity on Europa's surface, as labeled with the geographic extent to which electrons of a given energy affect the surface and how deeply they penetrate.'Landing on the surface of Europa is a key step in the astrobiological investigation of that world,' said Christopher McKay, PhD, Senior Editor of Astrobiology and a scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. The hope would be that surface materials, possibly near the linear crack features, include biomarkers carried up from the ocean.' As well as Europa, scientists believe that Encelade, a moon belonging to Saturn, could also be habitable. EUROPA - THE 'MOST LIKELY PLACE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM TO SUPPORT LIFE'Europa is the sixth closest moon to Jupiter and the smallest of the four Galilean satellites that belong to the planet. It was discovered by Galileo Galilei in January 1610 and is named after a Phoenician noblewoman in Greek mythology who was courted by Zeus and became the Queen of Crete.Europa orbits Jupiter in around three-and-a-half days with an orbital radius of 670,900km. It is slightly smaller than the Earth's moon, but at 3,100km in diameter it is the sixth largest moon and 15th largest object in the entire solar system.It is likely to have an outer layer of water, some 100km thick.
