MAY 12, 2013 - UNITED STATES - You may have never seen an unidentified flying object over Myrtle Beach, but if you live in this area, chances are you know someone who has.

The Grand Strand has long had more than its share of UFO sightings.

The creators of Myrtle Beach's newest attraction, "Encounters: UFO Experience", claim there's a good reason, besides this area's 14 million tourists, why they decided to locate it at Broadway at the Beach.

"Myrtle Beach is a hot spot for sightings," said Brian Bouquet of Intergalactic Brands.

It's true. A quick check of web sites like the Mutual UFO Network or the National UFO Reporting Center shows one report after another of sightings in Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove, Little River and so on.

Bill Barrett, who works a night shift at a Myrtle Beach ocean-front hotel, says he's seen many unexplained lights in the sky, often grouped together.

"The geometry is perfect, they're perfectly spaced, perfectly level on the horizon and they're probably about a mile-and-a-half to two miles off the beach," said Barrett.

Of the half-dozen sightings Barrett has witnessed over the years, the one that intrigues him the most - and seems the hardest to explain - was the giant orange oval object he saw last November.

It seemed to him to be dripping a lava-like fluid.

"When that happened, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I mean, explain that to me, what could that possibly be?"

One UFO expert says Myrtle Beach doesn't necessarily get more UFOs than other places. He says the same kinds of sightings are happening all over the world, but people on the Grand Strand seem to do a better job of reporting them.

"The willingness to report, investigate, treat fairly. They've done a good job of that here," said UFOlogist Stanton Friedman, who lectured on flying saucers for the grand opening of the UFO exhibit.

What are those objects seen in the sky? Where did they come from and how do they operate?

Friedman says he can't answer those questions, but he says from all over the world, there are reports of flying objects that defy explanation. Too many reports to dismiss.

"They're manufactured and they're not from here. That means they're from someplace else," he said.

But Coastal Carolina University astronomy professor Dr. Louis Rubbo says there's a simple, very earthly explanation for most of the sightings of lights in the sky over Myrtle Beach: fighter jets from Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, doing night-time exercises over the ocean.

"We're not used to seeing planes flying in formation especially at night and using non commercial lights on them," Rubbo said.

Rubbo says our visual perspective from the shoreline makes it appear that the planes are doing very quick, un-earthly maneuvers.

He scoffs at the notion that the UFOs seen over Myrtle Beach, or anywhere for that matter, are spacecraft from another planet.

He says the biggest problem is distance. Rubbo says the closest habitable planets are in the range of 10 to 100 light years away.

In space, light travels at a speed of 186 thousand miles per second, or about 5.9 trillion miles per year. That's the equivalent of one light-year.

So a planet that's 10 light-years away would be about 59 trillion miles from Earth. A spacecraft traveling at the speed of light, which the laws of physics says is impossible, would need a decade of travel just to get here.

And that's the closest habitable planet.

"The distances between stars is so immense that traveling between them is very difficult, and the probability of an alien life form making that trip is pretty small," Rubbo said.

But if Rubbo has an answer for lights in the sky, that doesn't explain everything, according to the South Carolina director of MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network.

Cheryl Ann Gilmore says one night last year, a tourist reported seeing not just lights, but an unexplained object floating over her Myrtle Beach hotel.

The Foster Ranch And The Blm

I was recently reviewing some of my old files and came upon some research I had done back in 1999, in reference to the then Foster ranch, where "Mack" Brazel had claimed to have found debris from an unknown craft in July 1947. Historical UFO researcher Wendy Connors and I had conducted several interviews with the local BLM office here in Roswell back in 1999, obtaining information and documents pertaining to the BLM's more recent involvement at the ranch.

I was surprised when recently, (10 years later), I read an article penned by Anthony Bragalia, entitled, "Roswell Crash Revelations from the Foster Ranch", in which I got the impression that he believed there was some conspiracy or cover-up by the BLM about the ranch. (I need to be clear here, in that I am not a big supporter of the way our government and military handled, and still handles information pertaining to the 1947 Roswell Incident.) However based on the research I did 10 years ago, I have no reason to believe the BLM is hiding or covering up anything about the ranch. In this case, I feel we may have an infrequent admission by a government agency that something did in fact happen on the Foster ranch in 1947.

In Bragalia's article he mentions that ranch foreman "Mack" Brazel was sometimes referred to as "Mac". That's a true statement and many articles referred to him as "Mac", however when I found Mack and Maggie's burial site the spelling on their tombstone was definitely "Mack".

I have the distinct impression that the article written about the Foster ranch by Bragalia is another of his attempts to take good research and put his own "spin" on it, as in this case, assuming that because of the restrictions put on the site by the BLM office, they are covering something up. The one paragraph in the BLM report he's referring to that I uncovered in 1999 consisted of several visits to the local BLM office, interviews with numerous employees involved in writing the report, and acquisition of actual documents from them.

When I first contacted the local BLM office in late 1998, I did not tell them who had made me aware of a document they had referring to the crash site. I had been told that an Environmental Impact Study had been recently done on the ranch that I might be interested in. That document was a United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, Environmental Assessment (EA) NM-066-99-003 on allotment #63020, concerning grazing.

I obtained a copy of the 12-page document, which was dated December 1, 1998. After reading through it, I found two paragraphs referring to the 1947 UFO crash contained in the report. Under Section III, Affected Environment, B., Affected Resources, the following paragraph on page 4 is copied from the actual document.

To imply that this paragraph got my attention would be an understatement, particularly since the document was signed off by 11 employees of the Roswell BLM office, including the cover letter, signed by the Acting Assistant Field Office Manager. I immediately contacted the BLM office to inquire about how the information was obtained and who wrote it. I was told that the gentleman who wrote it, did it as a joke to see if anyone would catch it, and it should have been removed before the document was made public. I was assured that it would not be included in the final copy. I of course requested a copy of the final report to verify if in fact that paragraph had been removed.

We also had the opportunity a day or two later to meet in person with the guy that had written that paragraph, and all the employees at BLM that we talked to were very cooperative with information, again insisting that it was a joke and that it would not be included in the final report. I was fairly emphatic in my response to them that some of us do not consider the study of Ufology a joke, and would anticipate getting a copy of the final document to review.

The second paragraph also containing a statement about the crash site is located on page 6 in the same Section III, B., Resources, as item 9., Recreation, shown here again copied from the actual document.

This is the paragraph that Anthony Bragalia referred to in his article, in which he assumes the BLM is involved with some conspiracy or cover-up. This paragraph remained in the final report dated August 9, 1999 which I received by certified mail from the U.S. Department of the Interior, postmarked August 10, 1999.

Having visited with several employees of the local BLM office on numerous occasions in regard to this document and other inquiries I've had, I do not feel that anyone associated with the BLM is involved with anything abnormal or any conspiracy about the crash site. Rather because I know of the interest at least one employee has in Ufology in general, and having listened to several other employees I believe the BLM is preserving this portion of land, unlike many of the historical buildings that no longer exist dealing with the Roswell Incident, such as Sheriff Wilcox's office, (now court rooms), the base infirmary, (now a vacant lot) and others.

During our visits to the BLM office we were always given answers to all of our questions, given maps of the crash site area, and other information useful in our research. Additionally, a few years ago the Sci-Fi channel in conjunction with the U. of New Mexico Archeological Department conducted a dig at the site. Would the BLM have allowed that if they were trying to cover up something?

We were told that the crash site is excluded from Right-of-way and mineral leasing and withdrawn from mining claim location and designated NSO, (No Surface Occupancy), for oil and gas leasing as a means of preserving the site.

The reason 40 acres of this land is Federal land is because it was never changed to state or private land, which is common on many ranches in New Mexico. It has nothing to do with a UFO crash site allegedly being on the ranch, other then a way to preserve it, with the Environmental Assessment document. The Federal land was also shown on the maps we were given.

I am appreciative of the fact that a Federal agency (Bureau of Land Management), is acknowledging in a public document that something may have happened on the Foster ranch by stating, "One of the alleged UFO crash sites of 1947 is located on this allotment", leaving the door open for more research.

I believe the BLM's statement about the "alleged site" being an extraordinary notation as stated by Bragalia also, but for very different reasons than he implies. Wendy Connors and I did a lot of legwork in our research with the BLM, which many in the field of Ufology do not do, while they claim to have all the answers. Unlike most of my research, this is one project that I believe may be to our advantage in the long run, warranting further investigation.

Cassini Sees Titan Cooking Up Smog

A paper published this week using data from NASA's Cassini mission describes in more detail than ever before how aerosols in the highest part of the atmosphere are kick-started at Saturn's moon Titan. Scientists want to understand aerosol formation at Titan because it could help predict the behavior of smoggy aerosol layers on Earth.

This image shows the first flash of sunlight reflected off a lake on Saturn's moon Titan. The glint off a mirror-like surface is known as a specular reflection. This kind of glint was detected by the visual and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIMS) on NASA's Cassini spacecraft on July 8, 2009. It confirmed the presence of liquid in the moon's northern hemisphere, where lakes are more numerous and larger than those in the southern hemisphere. Scientists using VIMS had confirmed the presence of liquid in Ontario Lacus, the largest lake in the southern hemisphere, in 2008 [Credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/DLR]"

According to the new paper, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Titan's trademark reddish-brown smog appears to begin with solar radiation on molecules of nitrogen and methane in the ionosphere, which creates a soup of negative and positive ions. Collisions among the organic molecules and the ions help the molecules grow into bigger and more complex aerosols. Lower down in the atmosphere, these aerosols bump into each other and coagulate, and at the same time interact with other, neutral particles. Eventually, they form the heart of the physical processes that rain hydrocarbons on Titan's surface and form lakes, channels and dunes.

The paper was led by Panayotis Lavvas, a Cassini participating scientist based at the University of Reims, Champagne-Ardenne, France. The team analyzed data from three Cassini instruments -- the plasma spectrometer, the ion and neutral mass spectrometer, and the radio and plasma wave science experiment. They compared their results to those obtained by ESA's Huygens probe on its descent through the Titan atmosphere in 2005 and found they were compatible.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. JPL is a division of Caltech. In any case, if you aren't familiar with the original Hill incident, know that the story itself, the couple's later hypnosis sessions with noted psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, and the eventual "Hill Star Map" constructed by teacher Marjorie Fish, which literally lifted the Barney and Betty Hill incident's credibility through the roof, are the essentials of this enigmatic situation.

As a member of NICAP and APRO when the Hill story first emerged decades ago, I remember my fascination with this incident, for this was the first "abduction" case to impress NICAP, and it certainly raised the stakes for APRO, which had followed similar international reports for years.

If you ever have an opportunity, be sure to see the seventies TV movie, "The UFO Incident," a dramatization of the Hill case based upon author John G. Fuller's book, The Interrupted Journey (which also must be read for an appreciation of the Hill's story). Melisa Hovey Interviews Bobbie Short

A very interesting interview with Bobbie Short from Melisa Hovey's Search for Bigfoot blog (I'm not sure how recent the interview is; didn't find a date.) Bobbie Short is a well known researcher, and we're fortunate she brings us the excellent Bigfoot Encounters site, as well as her newsletter. Lots of good advice from Short in this interview and really, I "almost" don't disagree with anything she has to say about research -- Bigfoot not being a giant ape, for example -- but naturally, we go separate ways here:

The most rewarding change has been the move away from the "bizarre" and the exodus away from the UFO related ideas. It used to be in the old days, the only place to read about hirsute hominids was in a UFO or like magazine. That trend is dying a fast death and I'm glad to see it go.

Now if we can just move research away from cryptozoology and those damn mystery apes, chupacabras, the moth man and Spring-Hill Jack, I'll be a happy camper.

Like UFO research, within Bigfoot research, there are huge divergences in ideas about what UFOs/Bigfoot might be. But that aside, it's a good interview!

Cia Glomar Explorer And Uso Alien Recovery Mystery Part Three

In 1972, the US NAVY recovered a secret from the ocean floor. Today, it is possible to confirm from the record that the dives took place -- at the correct depth, and in the approximate location of the sunken Russian submarine K-129.

According to the best information available, the K-129 was at least partially raised from the bottom in July 1974 by the CIA Glomar Explorer.

Whatever had been recovered by the US NAVY during the 1972 Trieste II dive had been locked into a commandeered cold food storage locker and placed under armed guard for the long journey home.

The Glomar recovery and the Trieste II recovery operations remain closely guarded secrets, in spite of evidence that the Russians had accessed a fair amount of information about the operation.

Consider this: a search for "Glomar" at navy.mil produces zero results.

However, in 1992, TIME magazine reported:

"Speaking to an American delegation in Moscow recently, a Russian intelligence officer revealed intimate knowledge of a 1974 mission in which the U.S. salvage ship Glomar Explorer raised a sunken Soviet nuclear submarine in the central Pacific."

Apparently it is better for the enemy to know the secrets than to provide them to the taxpayers who paid the bill for the recovery operation.

A Congressional review of America's paranormal programs produced little information about the NAVY psychic research:

"The US NAVY program was to evaluate an individual's ability to perceive remote visual stimuli. This effort was to answer the question whether the phenomena exist. No additional information is on file regarding the NAVY program."

Dan T. Smith, son of Dan Throop Smith, the late former tax adviser to the Eisenhower administration, tells the story of his friend Ron Pandolfi, from CIA.

As TIME explained in a 1995 article about deep sea mining:

"Oceanographers have long known that parts of the Pacific sea floor at depths between 14,000 ft. and 17,000 ft. are carpeted with so-called manganese nodules, potato-size chunks of manganese mixed with iron, nickel, cobalt and other useful metals. In the 1970s, Howard Hughes used the search for nodules as a cover for building the ship Glomar Explorer, which was used to salvage a sunken Soviet sub."

According to Dan Smith, his friend Pandolfi, as a college student, was given samples of the nodules by his uncle, who was involved with the CIA cover story for the Glomar operation.

Pandolfi had the samples analyzed and concluded they could not have come from the location claimed by Hughes and, suspecting this was a cover story for something bigger, soon drew the attention of a couple of "men in black" who advised he keep his suspicions to himself.

Pandolfi appears again in Smith's musing about a bizarre encounter with a couple of bodies in a hospital.

Smith tells the story of his 1992 disturbing encounter:

"I went back to work as a free-lance, mostly volunteer computer programmer in '85. I worked for... Daniel S Ruchkin, who was studying brain-waves at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore.

A former student of Ruchkin's was Dr. Richard L. Horst, Man-made Systems/UserWorks, Inc. I worked for Dick as a part-time subcontractor, being paid on a, more or less, hourly basis.

This was my status when Dick obtained a Navy contract to study the behavioral implications of psychological stress. The test subjects were to be the Anesthesiologists working at the UM Hospital's shock-trauma unit. We were going to be electrically recording their manipulations of various instruments during the procedures. As I try to recall the details and rationale of this supposed experiment, it is still not making much sense to me.

Dave Mahaffey and I spent several days in the S/T building, back and forth between the upstairs surgical floor, and someone's lab facility downstairs. Dave and I were setting up our equipment in one of the recovery cubicles outside of the operating area. While I was there, I only recall seeing one patient in one of the cubicles. There were always several nurses over at their station. More than once I heard them discussing the unusual lack of patients, in the facility.

One lunch hour, in the downstairs lab, the doctor in charge, told Dave and me that he wanted to show us a video to prepare us for having to work inside the surgical area. It was a 30 min color video of someone who had tried to commit suicide by shooting themselves in the face with a shotgun. Only the mouth was visible in what had once been his face. The surgeons were heard discussing the fellow's plight, off-screen. I was grossed-out, but not sufficiently so, that I could not finish my sandwich. I got the impression that guy remained more or less conscious.

Now we come to the day in question.......

I had been told that I would be introduced to the surgical area, the day before. I showed up a few minutes late, and Dave was not there. Instead was an asian fellow, heavily accented, whom I had not seen before. He instructed me to strip-down, before putting on the surgical gown. I balked at removing my shorts, and he became agitated. Since there was no scrubbing involved, I could not imagine the point of removing my shorts. Reluctantly he acquiesced, and we proceeded into the 'surgical' area.

It was not like any surgical area that had seen or imagined. There were some glass-walled cubicles. Hanging from the ceiling, by their four appendages, in two of the cubicles were two 'bodies'. Neither head was visible. I stood there staring at this scene for two or three minutes. I got the distinct impression that the four 'surgeons' in the nearest cubicle were quite bored. They appeared to be chatting to one another. There was no one in the second cubicle. There did not appear to be any skin, just brown [sic] exposed flesh, no blood. Like the face in video, but the wrong color.

I found the whole scene, and the context of its lengthy prelude, to be most unsettling. I went back out to where I found Dave. He was fiddling with the instruments. I just stood watching, feeling dumbfounded, and saying nothing. He suggested that I leave, and I readily complied.

The next morning I called the doctor who had shown us the video. I was already suspecting that this was one of those trick psychology experiments where the tester turns out to be the testee. I demanded an explanation for what I had witnessed. He said he would check and call me back. He soon called me back......

There had been a motorcycle accident with two victims. They were undergoing an emergency 'filleting' [sic!] procedure, in order to relieve excess blood pressure. This 'explanation' just made me angry. Only now have I had the gumption to look up that word, and find it only being applied to fish. If someone would care to investigate further, be my guest.

I told him that I was involved in some very sensitive business with someone at the CIA, and that if I ever found out that this experiment had any connection with that other business, I would become extremely angry. I was pretty much screaming over the phone, at that point.

And a few minutes later, the phone rang again. Guess who....?

Our buddy, Ron [Pandolfi], was on the other end. He seemed to be chuckling, while commenting on how I had really reamed-out the 'poor' doctor."

Smith readily admits that he has no idea who, or what, was in the two body bags. He does, however, point out from that day forward he has been acting as a civilian proxy for his friend Ron, who had once suffered the ire of the agency he now works for, so many years ago.

These days Smith continues to engage his friend Ron on the topic of government disclosure of an unworldly presence that Smith believes heralds the end of the world order as we know it.

Pandolfi, who had moved from CIA to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence MASINT committee, is said to have landed back at CIA HQ.

Kit Green, a retired CIA officer who had worked on the Glomar project, remains a government consultant on issues related to national security. Dr. Green, who witnessed first hand the psychic weirdness that inspired the government programs in "remote viewing," remains convinced there is a "core story" behind all of the strange tales.

In Dr. Green's version of the core, the otherworldly presence must be biological in nature. Visitors to our world, at least the kind of visitors that would be of interest to Green and his colleagues, must be extraterrestrial biological entities.

Stranger still:

In July 1974, as Dr. Green and his associates from CIA moved to take psychic remote viewing operational against the Soviets and, in the Pacific Ocean, recover a submarine that one of the CIA psychics would later describe as the target of interest to a "flying saucer" -- disembodied EVP (electronic voice phenomena) voices thousands of miles away were telling the story of the CIA physicists and their quest for paranormal powers, predicting a long-range plan that would be revealed some twenty years into the future.

Given the vast scale of the universe, and the likelihood there is far more "out there," Green's position should be of no surprise. Tantalizing tales of the EBEs from "high ranking authorities" in the U.S. government offer few clues to the underlying truth of what, if anything, a small group of "need to know" officials may actually know.

As for the rest of us, we are left to speculate from an ever-growing mountain of rumors.

As for myself, I continue to wonder what aspect of the "core story" is grounded in fact: the now infamous STAR GATE psychic spy program was once a fable.

Men Into Space Moon Probe 1959

Men Into Space was a half-hour American sci-fi television series broadcast from September 30, 1959 to September 7, 1960 by CBS which depicted future efforts by the United States Air Force to explore and develop outer space. The black-and-white filmed show starred William Lundigan as Col. Edward McCauley.

The series was not set in a specific era, but clues throughout the scripts indicated that it took place in the mid 1970s to mid 1980s, with the first moon landing somewhere around 1975. Props were occasionally futuristic (such as a forerunner of today's real-life LCD TVs) but the show's earthly clothing and environs, including automobiles, telephones and other machines, were decidedly 1950s. Men Into Space was somewhat unusual for a TV action series in that it had numerous recurring characters, but only one
the protagonist, Col. Edward McCauley (William Lundigan)
who was in each of the 38 episodes in the series. Tyler McVey appeared in seven episodes as Major General Norgath. Ron Foster appeared five times as Lieutenant Neil Templeton.

McCauley was a sort of "everyman" character who was viewed in the show as the most experienced and illustrious astronaut. As depicted in the scripts, the low-key but decisive McCauley was ubiquitous, assigned to every important space mission over at least a decade, including the earliest manned flights, the first flight to the moon, many additional moon landings and moon base construction missions, construction of a space station, and two flights to Mars (neither succeeded, and folklore has it that plans for a never-aired second season would have focused on further missions to Mars and beyond). In many episodes, the astronauts were faced with accidents or technical problems that required innovation. The program was not idealistic; missions sometimes failed and astronauts sometimes died. For example, a scientist-astronaut stricken with a heart attack while exploring the moon was not expected to survive the G-forces of the return flight, so his comrades stowed the space-suited patient in a steel drum filled with water, to cushion him during launch. A "Space Race" episode involved spacecraft from the USA and USSR starting out almost simultaneously on the first Mars mission, with one of the craft aborting its effort to rescue the other craft and crew after it experienced problems. The series included an episode whose plot essentially paralleled the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission's explosion in space more than a decade later, and another that was an uncanny foretelling of the accident that befell the real Gemini VIII mission in 1966.

Scripts often considered the human factor, and while action was the show's forte, humor and romance were part of the mix. Men Into Space predicted women astronauts and scientists, and married couples in space. The series was advertised as being for its era an extremely accurate preview of manned spaceflight, based on studies of the era and buttressed by technical assistance from the USAF's ballistic missile and space medicine offices. The spacecraft designs, however, veered inconsistently between early 1950s Wernher Von Braun concepts, and later, totally scaled-down proposals. Visual backdrops and conceptual designs of spacecraft, space stations and a moon base depended somewhat on contributions from notable astronautics artist Chesley Bonestell. The series also availed itself of extensive documentary footage of early missile launches. It evoked the earlier Disney space exploration documentaries, which in turn owed their look and feel to a widely read, early 1950s series on the subject in the old Collier's Weekly magazine, where Bonestell's art also held sway.Men Into Space, later syndicated as Space Challenge, used for its plots many technical and human problems anticipated by engineers and planners. For example, the show depicted attempts to refuel spacecraft by tanker in orbit, construction of a space telescope, an experiment to dispose of high level atomic waste by launching it into the sun, the search for life-sustaining frozen water on the moon, exploration and destruction of an asteroid whose orbit threatened Earth, and exo-fossil evidence of extraterrestrial life. Although the series was modestly budgeted, it was cleverly mounted with what, for its era, were good special effects helmed by Louis DeWitt. Even decades later, the series can still be appreciated for its attention to detail and accurate physics.

UK pop star Robbie Williams has tried re-inventing himself a few become old but very soon he's been show cryptogram of tricks in a non-musical supervision towards the world of UFO investigation.

He is quoted as saying: "Gravely, I opt to go out and look at these belongings. I'm stopping being a pop star and I'm leave-taking to be a full-time Ufologist."

Williams has an revenue in other areas of the paranormal as well, for prototype, he reportedly moved out Halloween at a seance in Stoke-on-Trent.
