Science Daily - The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has found signs of Earth-like planets in an unlikely place: the atmospheres of a pair of burnt-out stars in a nearby star cluster. The white dwarf stars are being polluted by debris from asteroid-like objects falling onto them. This discovery suggests that rocky planet assembly is common in clusters, say researchers.

The stars, known as white dwarfs -- small, dim remnants of stars once like the Sun -- reside 150 light-years away in the Hyades star cluster, in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull). The cluster is relatively young, at only 625 million years old.

Astronomers believe that all stars formed in clusters. However, searches for planets in these clusters have not been fruitful -- of the roughly 800 exoplanets known, only four are known to orbit stars in clusters. This scarcity may be due to the nature of the cluster stars, which are young and active, producing stellar flares and other outbursts that make it difficult to study them in detail.

A new study led by Jay Farihi of the University of Cambridge, UK, instead observed "retired" cluster stars to hunt for signs of planet formation .

Hubble's spectroscopic observations identified silicon in the atmospheres of two white dwarfs, a major ingredient of the rocky material that forms Earth and other terrestrial planets in the Solar System. This silicon may have come from asteroids that were shredded by the white dwarfs' gravity when they veered too close to the stars. The rocky debris likely formed a ring around the dead stars, which then funnelled the material inwards. "Keep on reading..."

> Larger imageResearchers studying what appears to be a beefed-up version of our solar system have discovered that it is encased in a halo of fine dust. The findings are based on infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, in which NASA is a partner.The dusty star system, called HD 95086, is located 295 light-years from Earth in the constellation Carina. It is thought to include two belts of dust, which lie within the newfound outer dust halo. One of these belts is warm and closer to its star, as is the case with our solar system's asteroid belt, while the second belt is cooler and farther out, similar to our own Kuiper belt of icy comets."By looking at other star systems like these, we can piece together how our own solar system came to be," said Kate Su, an associate astronomer at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and lead author of the paper.Within our solar system, the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are sandwiched between the two dust belts. Scientists think something similar is happening in the star system HD 95086, only on larger scales. One planet, about five times the mass of Jupiter, is already known to sit right inside HD 95086's cooler belt. Other massive planets may be lurking between the two dust belts, waiting to be discovered.Studies like this from Spitzer and Herschel point the way for ground-based telescopes to snap pictures of such planets in hiding, a technique referred to as direct imaging. The one planet known to exist in HD 95086 was, in fact, discovered and imaged using this technique in 2013. The images aren't sharp because the planets are so faint and far away, but they reveal new information about the global architecture of a planetary system."By knowing where the debris is, plus the properties of the known planet in the system, we can get an idea of what other kinds of planets can be there," said Sarah Morrison, a co-author of the paper and a PhD student at the University of Arizona. She ran computer models to constrain the possibilities of how many planets are likely to inhabit the system. "We know that we should be looking for multiple planets instead of a single giant planet."To learn what HD 95086 looks like, the astronomers turned to a similar star system called HR 8799. It too has an inner and outer belt of debris surrounded by a large halo of fine dust, and four known planets between the belts -- among the first exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system, to be directly imaged.Comparing data from the two star systems hints that HD95086, like its cousin HR 8799, is a possible home to multiple planets that have yet to be seen. Ground-based telescopes might be able to take pictures of the family of planets.Both HD 95086 and HR 8799 are much younger and dustier than our solar system. When planetary systems are young and still forming, collisions between growing planetary bodies, asteroids and comets kick up dust. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2011 "- Reviewed by David Simpson."There is little doubt the discovery of tell-tale signs of life elsewhere in the universe, let alone the receipt of an indisputably alien radio signal, would have massive implications for mankind - the first sign that life is not unique to Earth.This book takes us through the history of our quest for knowledge of the heavens, from Greek philosophers in the fifth century BC, through advances in astronomical observation methods, to the latest space telescopes. Finally it speculates a decade or more to the future, by when the author feels astronomers will probably have the means to detect the first signs of life elsewhere. It is not about SETI, not the long-standing attempt to detect intelligent alien radio signals, but rather how incremental advances in telescopes now mean that, for the first time, we are able to detect planets orbiting distant stars - albeit planets much larger than Earth and inhospitable to life [as we know it, Jim] - and to infer something about their likely properties. The title "Strange New Worlds" is perhaps a bit misleading as astronomers haven't yet found any new worlds of the might-contain-life variety and those they have found are not strange in the wholly unexpected sense. They have detected an impressive number in the 'almost certainly won't contain life' category, for example gas-giants like Jupiter, and rocky planets baking at 200 ^0C or more. Similarly misleading is the sub-title "The Search for Alien Planets"... hinting that astronomers are searching specifically for planets containing aliens, when they are not, and "Life Beyond Our Solar System" is last-chapter speculation about what future, more sensitive astronomical measurements might find. But I guess "A History of Man's Search for Exoplanets" would probably not sell so well. The subject's chronology is presented in detail, is well referenced and gives credit to many of the main scientists involved. Their biographical stories are interesting too, although extending this to the scientists' parents and even grandparents seems a bit much, as did the tedious information about who did a PhD under whom. I would have preferred the space to be used for a sentence or two here and there on the technical benefits of newer instruments, for example what was it about digital cameras and spectrographs that brought improved measurements? For non-astronomers like me the countless indecipherable alphanumeric strings of star identifiers were quite numbing but probably have to be there and were easily skipped. The principles employed in detecting extrasolar planets are clearly explained, such as: measuring the tiny cyclic changes in the Doppler shift of light from a distant star - indicating the gravitation tug of an orbiting planet; 'microlensing'not - looking at starlight as it is bent and amplified by the gravitational field of a large intervening object or; transit measurements - measuring the periodic changes in star brightness as it is eclipsed by an orbiting planet. It is fascinating to appreciate the changes in scientific attitude towards the subject, from the 1980s when bothering to searching for extraterrestrial planets or even whether it was a legitimate part of astronomy was questioned, to today when vast sums of money are spent funding scientific teams exploring avenues in 'astrobiology'. This includes, for example, working out what constitutes a biosignature - something that indicates the existence of living organisms. Gripes aside, it is an interesting and well written book that doesn't need much technical knowledge to be appreciated.

Forget cost, political will and all the other variables - simply obtaining enough energy will take until 2196, according to Marc Millis, former head of NASA's Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project and founder of the Tau Zero Foundation, which supports interstellar travel research. Millis did plenty of extrapolating to reach this conclusion, which he presented at an astronomy meeting in Prague last fall and posted to the physics archive this week.
