Whatever, the skies over Kansas City have seen a surge in mysterious sightings and strange lights.

Some of you are thinking, sure, sure, just more swamp gas. Logical explanations usually come out the next day.

There is that.

But according to the Missouri chapter of Mutual UFO Network (Mufon), witnesses reported 14 "unknown" sightings in July and August alone for Kansas City. "Unknown" means they've been investigated and the likely suspects - aircraft, meteors, satellites, balloons, blimps, spotlights hitting clouds, Army parachute teams - ruled out.

Some reports are pretty good - witnesses seeing the same thing, even close encounters in which an unidentified object hovered within 100 feet of witnesses.

"In one very odd case, several tourists were visiting the Liberty Memorial and watched a large golden ball of light being chased by a helicopter," Margie Kay, assistant director for Missouri Mufon, said Friday.

"In another case in Belton, five witnesses saw a saucer-shaped craft with blue lights hover over two nearby houses."

The latest sightings bring the year's total for the metro area to 45 compared with 103 for all of Missouri.

A website calls Kansas City "a hotbed of UFO activity."

About 1 a.m. on July 2, Ben Radatz was working late at his motion graphics company in the Crossroads District when he stepped outside for a smoke.

Ten or so bright lights were moving slow and low in a straight line over downtown.

Radatz shot video with his phone.

"I don't discount the possibility, but I'm not going around telling people I saw a UFO," he said.

But then there's Dennis McNerney, who lives in the Northland. He saw the same thing, and he works in pest control.

Unlike Radatz, McNerney is sure what he saw.

"They're extraterrestrial spacecraft," he said.

Anybody who would actually say something positive about my writing obviously required questioning, so I immediately sat down and typed out a letter to Lou on one of several old used office typewriters I kept around the house.Thus began several years of typed correspondence between Lou and I, he at that time the resident of a town called Plumerville, and I came to know him as very well-informed, intimately involved in UFO research and proud as can be of the annual Ozark UFO convention he ultimately put together. His inspiring, articulate letters reflected not only extensive knowledge of UFO history and current events, but an upbeat sense of humor which never failed. His articles appeared in numerous publications over the years, and though some of his opinions may have seemed extreme to some (for instance, he was a bit more supportive of some contactee claims than others may have been, if they accepted any such claims whatsoever), he didn't shirk from taking a stand on issues of controversy, whether involving UFOs or topics of the paranormal. Along with Rod Dyke, he regularly churned out UFO Newsclipping Service issues, a monthly compilation of photocopied newspaper articles about UFO reports throughout the world. [Note: the UFONS issues were eventually published by Farish alone, and years later Dyke reacquired the responsibilities, and UFONS finally ceased publication only recently.]Years passed and the letters between us became fewer and fewer, and by the time e-mail became routine we were only in contact on rare occasions in recent years. As great as the advances of human engineering are, our present technology would not be able to provide the means for conquering not only space but an entire planet with enough manpower to uphold the occupation. Clearly, the alien invaders of ancient times were not only technologically far ahead of human achievements. To master space travel one needs to be able to cope with formidable technological challenges.

Let's address them one by one.

Propulsion systems based on fuel consumption are totally inadequate for space travel even over cosmically small distances. Space travel at any reasonable scale is only possible with an energy source that is inexhaustible. Such energy source can only be a form of energy, which is present throughout the universe like electromagnetism or the quantum vacuum.

Reports of so-called UFOs wonder about the erratic course they follow. - In ancient times important spiritual buildings like temples and sanctuaries were erected at carefully chosen sites. In the Aegean Sea and in Greece there are a many such structures. When connecting them it becomes apparent that there is a grid like pattern to their locations.

The solution to this problem can only be a mechanism, which shields off the forces of gravity. What kind of mechanism can do that I do not know. But I do know that maintaining one's dimension is a foremost necessity in space travel. - This requires an explanation. A material dimension is determined by the speed a body travels through space and there is no difference whether it is spacecraft or a planet. There is something called the energy constant of the Universe. This constant is the energy available for motion and oscillation between the states of energy and matter. The more energy is used for motion meaning the faster a body travels through space the less frequent are the oscillations between the stages of energy and matter; a body gets longer and slower times passes. -- Einstein's Theory of Relativity confirms this.

On the reverse side, the more slowly a body moves, the more frequent are the oscillations between the stages of energy and matter; a body get shorter and time passes faster.
