What is it? Our celestial curb appeal?

That, or those at the helm of all these UFOs this summer may think the new Kaufmann Center for the Performing Arts is some kind of mother ship.

Whatever, the skies over Kansas City have seen a surge in mysterious sightings and strange lights.

Some of you are thinking, sure, sure, just more swamp gas. Logical explanations usually come out the next day.

There is that.

But according to the Missouri chapter of Mutual UFO Network (Mufon), witnesses reported 14 "unknown" sightings in July and August alone for Kansas City. "Unknown" means they've been investigated and the likely suspects - aircraft, meteors, satellites, balloons, blimps, spotlights hitting clouds, Army parachute teams - ruled out.

Some reports are pretty good - witnesses seeing the same thing, even close encounters in which an unidentified object hovered within 100 feet of witnesses.

"In one very odd case, several tourists were visiting the Liberty Memorial and watched a large golden ball of light being chased by a helicopter," Margie Kay, assistant director for Missouri Mufon, said Friday.

"In another case in Belton, five witnesses saw a saucer-shaped craft with blue lights hover over two nearby houses."

The latest sightings bring the year's total for the metro area to 45 compared with 103 for all of Missouri.

A website calls Kansas City "a hotbed of UFO activity."

About 1 a.m. on July 2, Ben Radatz was working late at his motion graphics company in the Crossroads District when he stepped outside for a smoke.

Ten or so bright lights were moving slow and low in a straight line over downtown.

Radatz shot video with his phone.

"I don't discount the possibility, but I'm not going around telling people I saw a UFO," he said.

Skeptics' alert: Guy who owns motion graphics company makes a video. Right.

But then there's Dennis McNerney, who lives in the Northland. He saw the same thing, and he works in pest control.

He was driving across the river into downtown about the same time Radatz stepped out for that smoke.

"The lights were glowing and pulsating," he said. "They were below the roofline of the AT&T (Town Pavilion) building. I pulled over to watch."

Unlike Radatz, McNerney is sure what he saw.

"They're extraterrestrial spacecraft," he said.

He's seen them before.

The Mystery Of The 3D And Other Corn Circles

Crop circles are always controversial. Are they genuine or faked? Two men, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, claim they have created 200 crop circles around the Warminster area in England. They have even told of their techniques.

So, yes, some are fakes but some crop circles cannot be accounted for. Here's something from "Cheryl Hopkins" which gives a positive slant to the debate. See what you think.

"Last week, a lady came to my meditation group to give a talk on Wiltshire crop circles and turned up with the expert himself, Fred Rusher, who had just arrived in the UK from Arizona to study this year's phenomenal geometric circles.

Fred has been studying these shapes since they first appeared in modern times (though his research has found that the first crop circle was chronicled in the 1500s).

He showed a video of himself and colleagues demonstrating a possible natural theory as to how these circles form.

Fred sprinkled sand on a flat square board then played high frequency sounds at it, making the sand whirl around and form various geometrical shapes. The shape changed with the sound frequency.

Particularly interesting was that Fred linked everything to God or whatever you call him. He said the messages in the crop circles are from the Divine creator and in this latest crop circle are three distinctive crosses (see photo at top of post).

There is more to the universe than scientists want is to believe but, fortunately, the truth is coming out."

It is interesting that crop circles are getting more and more intricate almost as if to say: "'look these can't possibly have been made overnight by men with planks of wood and some string.' "

One of the latest (July 2010) around the Warminster area is pictured at the top of this post and has a 3D effect. The picture on the right shows what is believed to have been the first three dimensional crop circle from July 2006. What is the message, if any, which needs to be in 3D?

If we accept that some crop circles are made by man how can we distinguish which are definitely fake and those that are perhaps genuine? Dr. William Levengood from the University of Michigan has an explanation.

Dr Levengood claims that the plants, in genuine crop circles, undergo changes and this includes a swelling of the nodes (knuckle like joints on the stems) and says that this cannot be reproduced by a hoaxer.

His actual explanation for crop circles is that they are caused by unstable vortices of ions originating in the atmosphere, which reach the ground in a similar way to lightening. In that moment a burst of heat makes the plant nodes swell up while the crops are whirled round and laid flat.

There are dozens of theories about how corn circles are created, UFOs, ley lines, hoaxers etc. etc., but many reckon that as 2012 approaches they will become more numerous and more intricate. Perhaps, one day, as with many other mysteries, we will discover their full meaning and significance.

Hufford And The Hag

One of the most (if not the most) important books ever written on the subject of UFO abductions is David Hufford's "The Terror That comes in the Night". It deals with the 'Old Hag' night-visitor phenomenon, which is intimately connected to alien abductions. Magonia recognised the importance and relevance of this book when it was first published, and acknowleged that it provides a key to understanding a wide range of human experiences which had previously been considered only in terms of rumour and folklore. Hufford's work made it clear that these were real experiences that happened to real people who reported them accurately, but by and large to people who didn't take them seriously! The exact interpretation of Hufford's work has for a long time been a bone of contention between Magonia's editors and America's leading UFO historian and encyclopaedist, Jerome Clark.
