Skunk Ape And Other Ape Updates

Skunk Apes or Swamp Apes are back in the news again. A little new material is available, but I thought it was a good time for a little review. The Skunk Ape or Swamp Ape is an unknown animal which seems to prefer the warmer lowlands of the Southern USA, and sightings overlap with (and are often confused with) more usual Bigfoot-types of reports. The ape type is especially common in parts of Florida and Texas, but in both places there are also more definite sightings of a more humanlike (Neanderthal-like) being. The tracks of both are very distinctive, the human category having human feet and the ape category having ape feet.

The SKUNK APE is a hominid cryptid said to inhabit the Southern United States, from places such as North Carolina and Arkansas, although reports from Florida are most common. It is named for its appearance and for the unpleasant odor that is said to accompany it. According to the United States National Park Service, the skunk ape exists only as a local myth. Reports of the Skunk ape were particularly common in the 1960s and 1970s. In the fall of 1974, numerous sightings were reported in suburban neighborhoods of Dade County, Florida, of a large, foul-smelling, hairy, ape-like creature, which ran upright on two legs.

HISTORY

Sightings of the skunk ape go back to before Europeans arrived. Indian tribes such as the Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole all told stories of a creature that stood 5-8 feet tall and gave off a pungent odor. When Europeans arrived, they learned of the legends from the Native Americans. They reported that these creatures were dangerous towards white people and friendly towards the Indians. A famous example of this reportedly occurred in the fall of 1822. One cold night, two hunters were awoken by a fierce roar near their camp and fled leaving all of their belongings behind. They made it back to their village and told their friends of their experience. The villagers formed a posse to hunt down the creature. They searched the woods for several days armed with rifles, pistols, swords, and knives. After a week of searching, they reportedly found huge footprints in the mud close to where the hunters had their experience. Encouraged by this new find, they made camp and planned to continue searching the next morning. Later that night however, the creature attacked the camp. The creature was reportedly hit repeatedly but still continued to attack. The posse fought back but the creature killed several of the men before they finally managed to kill it. The survivors examined the creature, which they claimed had jet black hair, was 12-13 feet tall and weighed over 1200 lbs. Fearing that the sounds of the battle would attract other creatures, the survivors fled back to the village without bothering to take any evidence of the creature. Historians and biologists argue whether this event really happened. Some say its just a story passed from generation to generation. Others say it happened, but the animal was possibly an unusually large black bear.

MYAKA PHOTOGRAPHS

In 2000, two photographs of an alleged ape, said to be the Skunk Ape, were taken anonymously and mailed to the Sarasota Sheriff's Department in Florida. They were accompanied by a letter from a woman claiming to have photographed it on the edge of her backyard. The photographer claimed that on three different nights the ape had entered her yard to take apples from a bushel basket on her porch. She was convinced it was an escaped orangutan. The police were dispatched to the house numerous times but when they arrived the Skunk Ape, also known as the stink ape, was gone. The pictures have become known to Bigfoot enthusiasts as the "skunk ape photos".

Loren Coleman is the primary researcher on the photographs, having helped track down the two photographs to an "Eckerd photo lab at the intersection of Fruitville and Tuttle Roads" in Sarasota County, Florida.

Though there are many searches/expeditions for the skunk ape, there is an official skunk ape headquarters in Ochopee, Florida. This skunk ape hotspot is run by David Shealy and his brother, Jack.

There are two kinds of reports and they are not otherwise similar: the groundsloth type reports specify a quadruped the size of a hose or cow with claws, a thick tail, and a shaggy coat like a wolf's, and then again there is the Mapinguari which is like an ape, tailless, about mansized but with unusual features including the typical allegation it is headless, a cyclops, and has a fanged muzzle coming out from its torso.

Mothman Museum

Sitting in a storefront on a otherwise banal street corner in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the Mothman Museum is the only public collection devoted solely to the mysterious insect creature that is said to have plagued the area in the 1960s becoming prominent enough to give Bigfoot a run for its money.

Between 1966 and 1967 residents of Point Pleasant began reporting sightings of a mysterious, vaguely humanoid creature said to have glowing red eyes and massive wings. This elusive cryptid was soon dubbed the Mothman and it quickly nestled deep into the American consciousness thanks to a few popular tomes on the encounters. The popularity of the creepy creature continued to grow over the decades inspiring movies and television plots among other media, soon leaving a trail of speculation and waves of further sightings.

The history of the popular legend is documented and exhibited in Point Pleasant's very own museum devoted to the mystery. The collection on display includes everything from newspaper clippings from the time of the original sightings to books, toys, and memorabilia from the Mothman's various multimedia appearances. The focus of the museum is weighted in favor of the beast's media presence and less on the hard history of the sightings, but manages to be informative nonetheless. In addition there is also a prominent and well-stocked gift shop for visitors' cryptid related needs.

The owner and operator of the museum is has not only written a book about the creature but is also the founder of the city's yearly Mothman Festival, so anyone wanting to try and crack the mystery of the creature wide open would be hard pressed to find a better starting point for their investigation.

Sure enough, this is someone's joke, but there is some truth behind it - the Siberian Yeti has become one of the main local brands of the Tashtagol District of Russia's Kemerovo Region. The town of Tashtagol is dotted with funny monuments to the Abominable Snowman. I even saw a caf'e called "Sushi Yeti". Genuine yetimania is used to attract tourists.

The legends about large human-like creatures populating this region have been circulating for centuries, but the locals were reluctant to speak about their sightings. They believe that the Yeti helps hunters in the taiga and even saves their lives, but once a hunter reveals the story it could spell trouble for him.

That is why locals kept silent and only the elderly, who gave up hunting due to their age, have passed down these legends down the generations. One of those legends dates around 1950s. It tells the story of hunters who captured a "snowwoman" and brought her on their sleighs to the town. Unfortunately, it is unclear what happened to her later.

All sightings have been unconfirmed until two years ago. Researchers discovered a cave with extremely large footprints. The rumor spread across the country attracting crowds of scholars and the curious.

Two years later, the region is hosting a major international meeting featuring the brightest "yetiologists" from Russia, Canada and the US. They have come here to conduct a field study and issue a verdict, whether the Snowman resides here.

Yeti enthusiasts insist there are several species of the Yeti, depending on the geography of their location. They believe the Snowman is a species that evolved parallel to Homo sapiens, but has not reached the same level....

I have been indicating Oudemans' table of sizes and proportions on page 492 of the Great Sea-Serpent and I have indicated that I think that proportions of the more visible parts of the Sea Serpent's body are correct in the first few (Smallest) columns (Always remembering that the long tail probably means the wake in most cases) Why then does the table continue on to what are truly monstrous sizes? To quote Oudemans' text that refers to this table: "I have ventured to draw up the following table of the animal's proportions for ten individuals [10 sample sizes-DD], differing in age or sex.

I am far from asserting that these dimensions will [Absolutely] prove to be correct if ever an individual should fall into the hands of men, but I am sure that they are approximately correct.

Perhaps you will in no case admit the possibility of the existence of an animal of 250 feet [in length]! Well, I leave it to you to fix yourself the utmost possible length of our Sea-serpent!"

[By Oudemans' count, the number of sightings estimating a total length of over 100 feet is around 10% of the total number of reports, and of course that '100 feet' now has to be reduced for some length of tail. Stories and sightings of the Mokele-Mbembe can be found as far back as 1776, and since the early 1900s missionaries and explorers that visit the region have been told of a massive sauropod that dwells in the local rivers. Witnesses claim it resembles a dragon or a Brontosaurus, though no reliable photographic evidence of the monster exists. There are several stories of local hunters killing a Mokele-Mbembe with spears, with one tale relating that when the creature was brought back to the village for a celebration and cooked, all who ate some of it soon died. In recent years, a number of expeditions have gone to the jungles in search of the water beast, but no evidence of its existence has been uncovered.

6. MOTHMAN

The Mothman has been described as a large, man-sized creature with the wings of a moth and red eyes. It was spotted by a number of residents of Charleston and Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1966 and 1967 prior to the collapse of a suspension bridge that resulted in the deaths of 46 people. After the bridge collapse, sightings of the Mothman died out, leading many to speculate that the creature only appears before disasters. Perhaps the only cryptid to be the mascot of a major sports franchise (in this case the New Jersey hockey team), the Jersey Devil is one of the most well known folk creatures. Its legend dates back to the 1700s, when it is said to have been borne of a witch called Mother Leeds and "the devil himself." The creature supposedly has a horse's head and hooves, a long neck, and large, bat-like wings. It's eyes are said to glow red, and when spotted it gives out a terrifying, high-pitched squeal. It is purported to haunt the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, and over the years it has been credited with the deaths of a number of livestock, and is even said to have poisoned local creeks and streams. There have been countless sightings of the Jersey Devil in and around the Pine Barrens over the years, but most famously in 1909, when thousands of people as far away as Pennsylvania claimed to have spotted it. In the 1960s, a 10,000 reward was offered for the capture of the Jersey Devil, but it has gone unclaimed, and new sightings of the creature are reported every year.

4. YETI

Also known as "The Abominable Snowman," the Yeti is a large, ape-like creature that is said to exist in the Himalayas of Nepal and Tibet. The creature is well documented in the oral history and myths of the local people, but its legend grew as soon as westerners began to climb Himalayan peaks like Mt. Everest. Dating back to the 1800s, a number of climbers have reported seeing a large primate walking on two legs, and even more have discovered impossibly large footprints in the mountain snow. Famed mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reported seeing such footprints during their historic trek up Mt. Everest, though both would later deny the Yeti's existence. As recently as 1984, an American mountaineer reported being stalked by the creature as he climbed Everest, but he was unable to produce any convincing photographs. Like most of the more well known cryptids, the Yeti legend has given rise to many hoaxes, including a famous piece of film faked by a Fox television show. Still, though most remain skeptical, the Yeti legend has been given an unusual amount of credibility among scientists, if only because the remoteness and sheer size of the Himalayas has prevented any kind of adequate investigation from being undertaken.

El Chupacabra was first spotted in Puerto Rico in the mid-nineties, and is said to be reptilian in appearance, with a row of spines on its back and sharp fangs. The Associated Press eventually picked up a story about the find, and soon people around the country were searching for the Sasquatch. Another breakthrough came in 1967, when two men named Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin claimed they had filmed the Bigfoot walking through the woods near Bluff Creek, California. Their footage, now known as the Patterson-Gimlin film, remains the most famous evidence of the Bigfoot's existence, despite a later claim by a friend of Patterson's who said he had dressed in an ape suit to help the men engineer a hoax. Scientists generally dismiss Nessie as a fantasy, but cryptozoologists and other believers have argued that the Loch, which has depths of over 700 feet, could support such a massive creature, which they hypothesize might be able travel from the ocean to the loch via an underwater passage. Over the years the world has heard numerous tales of mythical creatures living amongst us. The animals concerned have become the stuff of legends and some people have even claimed to possess photographic or video evidence of their existence. It is all very exciting to believe that these amazing characters are out there waiting to be captured but is it likely that any of them actually exist?CHUPACABRAThe chupacabra is a dog-like animal which legend says inhabits the Americas, particularly South America. The creature is supposedly in the habit of killing livestock and drinking the blood rather like a canine vampire and is said to possess a row of spines down its back from its neck to the base of its tail. Many sightings have been reported from places as disparate as Chile in the South and Maine in the Northern United States but none have been corroborated. In 2000 a video which appeared to show a chupacabra was released to CNN by one Anderson Cooper who filmed the footage in Texas. The film did appear to genuinely show a strange canine running along a dirt road but several corpses found in the area have revealed that this animal was almost certainly a coyote suffering from mange. It is very unlikely that chupacabras have ever existed as no physical evidence in the shape of corpses, skeletons or DNA has ever been found.THE BEAST OF BODMINSince 1999 there have been over 60 reported sightings of a big cat in the Bodmin area of England. The cat is allegedly black, looks like a puma and has been blamed for attacks on livestock in the area. The frequency of the sighting s prompted a Government report into the animal in 1995 which concluded that there was no firm evidence that it exists but no clear proof that it does not. Following the report a very compelling piece of video footage emerged clearly showing a large black cat. Other videos have been made over the years but none have offered definitive proof. There have been too many reports of sightings by credible witnesses to dismiss easily and some very credible video footage. It could be that this animal is a one off which escaped from a private collection and is still roaming the countryside. Not a mythical species just a well-known one in the wrong place!THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMANOnly the possible existence of Aliens has had more controversy surrounding it than the Abominable Snowman or Yeti of the Himalayas and Bigfoot, a similar creature which supposedly inhabits North America. These huge ape-like animals are purported to live in mountainous regions, roaming the hills and forests. Over the years there have been many alleged sightings, several photographs and even video footage of the giant apes in the wild.
