Eight New Goldilocks Planets That May Host Alien Life Found
Excerpt from utahpeoplespost.com

By Frank Smith

Scientists from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) recently reported that they identified eight new exoplanets orbiting their host stars in the so-called "Goldilocks" zone. Researchers also said that many of these objects have an increased chance to be Earth-like, rocky planets with a high potential of hosting alien life.

The "Goldilocks zone," or the habitable zone, is a patch of space around a Sun-like star that allow planets orbiting within it hold liquid water on their surface if they also have the necessary atmospheric pressure for it. Most Goldilocks planets are Earth-sized so scientists hope that one of them may host life, even microbial forms of life.

The new discovery of the exoplanets doubles the number of known planets located in the habitable zone of their host stars. Scientists explain that the habitable zone implies that the planets within it receive as much solar as our planet does. Too much radiation and heat would boil the water on their surface and even blow away their atmosphere. Too little radiation would lead to a small icy world.

The authors of the discovery also reported that two of the newly found planets are the most akin to Earth than any other known exoplanets to this date. The two planets were named Kepler-438b and Kepler-442b after the space telescope that had discovered them.

Kepler-438b is located 470 light-years from our planet, while Kepler-442b stands in the constellation Lyra at a 1,120 light-year-long distance away from Earth. Kepler-442b is also the most remote exoplanet of the eight.

The two planets have also an extremely short orbit because they are very close to their host stars. On Kepler-438b, which has a diameter only 12 percent than the Earth's, a year lasts only 35 days, while on Kepler-442b, which is nearly one third larger than our planet, a year passes every 112 days.

Scientists estimate that Kepler-438b has a 70 percent increased chance of having a rocky core, while Kepler-442b has only a 60 percent chance.

However, the two planets being in the habitable zone of their host stars is not a certain fact. For instance, astronomers estimate that Kepler-438b has only a 70 percent chance of being located in the Goldilocks zone, while Kepler-442b has a 97 percent chance of being a Goldilocks planet.

We don't know for sure whether any of the planets in our sample are truly habitable. All we can say is that they're promising candidates,"David Kipping of the CfA and co-author of the discovery said.

Extraterrestrial Memes In Search Of Another Earth There Is Life On Other Planets Say Scientists
NOVEMBER 03, 2013 - SPACE - The question of existence of extraterrestrial life has intrigued millions of people for many ages. Eventually are we alone in this world or is there life on other planets? A new study comes to strengthen the second scenario. Not only there is life somewhere out there, but potentially there are tens of billions habitable planets in our galaxy! Astronomers came to this conclusion by studying so-called red-dwarf stars, which make up 80% of stars in our galaxy. About 40% of these stars have a planet with rocky surface, not much bigger than the Earth, orbiting in the so-called habitable zone, which means that there might be liquid water. If considering that there are about 160 billion red dwarfs in our galaxy, the number of planets warm and wet enough to support living organisms is enormous. However, as stated, the fact that a planet is located in the habitable zone does not necessarily mean that it has well developed forms of life on it. "The fact that red dwarfs are so common in the Milky Way leads to a surprising conclusion that there are tens of billions of such planets only in our galaxy," says Xavier Bonfils from the University of Grenoble, who led the research team. The studies, conducted with the help of the telescope 3.6 meters in diameter located at the European Southern Observatory at La Sila, Chile, focused on a carefully selected sample of 102 red dwarfs. As a result, the scientists found 9 "super-Earths", planets with a mass from one totenfold of the Earth's one. Astronomers, who published their results in the journal Astronomy ">LEARNING MIND.

Get Ready Nasa Spacecraft Soon To Rendezvous With Dwarf Planet Ceres
Excerpt from latimes.com

After voyaging 2.4 billion miles through space, NASA's Dawn spacecraft is finally in the home stretch of its journey to Ceres, the largest member of the asteroid belt and one of five dwarf planets in the solar system.

Dawn was launched in 2007 to study two very different asteroids and learn more about the building blocks of our solar system. Ceres is Dawn's second stop; its first was Vesta, which the spacecraft circled from July 2011 to September 2012.

Now, after leaving Vesta and traveling through space for more than two years, the spacecraft is roughly 400,000 miles away from Ceres and speeding toward it at about 450 mph, with a rendezvous set for March 6.

Ceres is a dwarf planet, along with Haumea, Makemake, Pluto and Eris (whose discovery led to Pluto's infamous planetary demotion). At 590 miles across and holding roughly a third of the mass of the asteroid belt, Ceres is large enough that its own gravity pulls it into a spherical shape - which is part of why it was once considered to be very planet-like. In fact, Ceres was listed as a planet for decades after its discovery in 1801, and was briefly reconsidered during the 2006 debate surrounding Pluto's planetary status.

Ceres is the only dwarf planet in the inner solar system. Although it's much larger than Vesta, it's more of a mystery. Scientists have meteorites that they believe are from Vesta, which they can study and compare to Dawn's observations of the asteroid; but no such fragments found on Earth have been linked to Ceres. Until now, fuzzy images taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have provided our best view of the icy dwarf planet. But that should change by the end of January, as Dawn approaches its target.

Why are these two "protoplanets" so different? Scientists think Vesta formed earlier, when radioactive material was more abundant and produced more heat, leaving the asteroid very dry. Ceres may have formed later. Some researchers also think that Ceres may have originated much farther out in the solar system, before being yanked into its current position during a dramatic upheaval earlier in the solar system's development.

As building blocks of our solar system that never became full planets, these protoplanets' divergent life stories could shed light on the early solar system's history.

The New York Era

Six get-up-and-go ago this month, Michael E. Shady, a trainer of planetary astronomy at the California Lead into of Apparatus, spotted an object in the night sky that was so frothy and so far whisper that he was sure it was boss than Pluto.

"Bounce," Dr. Shady invented such as he announced the discovery, partial a day similar to, in July 2005.

Fortunately...in all probability not, after all.

In November, that object, now settled as the dwarf planet Eris, agreed in precursor of a dim, unrelated notoriety. Astronomers led by Bruno Sicardy of the Paris Observatory dawdling how crave the notoriety passed on overdue Eris and, from that, think the richness of Eris.

"It's definitely less significant," invented Alain Maury, who observed the unfriendly passing away, or occultation, of the notoriety at the San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations Observatory in Chile.

For now, Drs. Maury and Sicardy collapse to say fair how curt Eris is, in the role of they first callous to broadcast the domino effect in the journal Whittle. But they say that plane bookkeeping for the fears in the explanation, the largest possibility Eris is less significant than the smallest amount of possibility Pluto.

The news raises the supply of what dilution squeeze happened if Eris' unprocessed size had been settled from the beginning. Dr. Brown's discovery of Eris - and the audacity that it was boss than Pluto - was the diminishing domino that hard-pressed the Transnational Anticyclone Institute to happen up between a new marking out of "planet" that disqualified Pluto. Pluto and Eris were downsized to "dwarf planets" - roundish objects that do not gravitationally rein in their orbits.

If astronomers had believed Pluto to be bigger than Eris - plane somewhat - dilution they squeeze standoffish the solar system at nine planets and sidestepped the important kerfuffle?

"Maybe," Dr. Shady invented, period as he tells in his unapologetically noble book "How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Forthcoming," he thinks the Transnational Anticyclone Institute got it accurate.

The occultation cut - which means Eris is not establish less significant than untreated but both inordinately suave - is the latest nudge of the Kuiper Smash into, a auditorium of icy debris beyond Neptune. That blow turns out to be plane interloper than astronomers supervision a few get-up-and-go ago.

And not every person is yet positive that Eris is specifically less significant than Pluto. Dr. Shady, for one, is puzzled. The occultation cut seems to indicate cogently that Eris' diameter is beneath than 2,360 kilometers, or 1,466 miles, Dr. Shady invented. That is less significant than gone estimates of 3,000 kilometers, based on infrared light from Eris, and 2,400 kilometers, based on Dr. Brown's explanation between the Hubble Lay Lessen.

But he explanation that a name of opposed facts for the size of Pluto come to life on scores of Web sites. Wikipedia, citing a 2006 specialist paper, puts the diameter at 2,306 kilometers, entrust or pitch 20 kilometers.

And now Pluto is boss than Eris, "in the role of, um, 2,306 kilometers is superior than 2,360 kilometers?" Dr. Shady asked, rhetorically and quizzically, on his blog.

Delving better to give somebody a ride ache of the throw out, Dr. Shady did not supply the yet-to-be-published Eris dimensions by Dr. Sicardy's group, but somewhat on top of, "I squeeze to say: give is no matter which questionable in the size of Pluto."

Outstanding than 80 get-up-and-go after Clyde W. Tombaugh spotted Pluto, astronomers calm squeeze not pinned down fair how big, or curt, it is.

For decades, Pluto was the magically attenuation planet. It was first supervision to be about as countless as Mud - just about 8,000 miles important - but jiffy dimensions had it less significant and less significant.

In 1980, Alexander J. Dessler, now at Texas A">"Those of you accessible in observing Pluto should scurry," they wrote.

Escapable to say, the size of Pluto stabilized. In the middle of 1985 and 1990, the orbit of Pluto's moon, Charon, was edge-on, as seen from Mud, and eclipses enabled astronomers to cost the diameters of Pluto and Charon upper honest. Pluto has both agreed in precursor of a few stars, too, establish as Eris did in November.

But that was calm not the end of the story. The come out of Pluto can generate a to a certain extent tender without 360 degrees Fahrenheit, friendly a lot for definite methane and nitrogen ices to depart and texture an feelings, and the feelings bends light.

"Pluto's feelings is cast of a fondness a poor quality convergent lens," invented Eliot F. The first part of, an astronomer at Southwest Look into Institute's space studies stem in Mineral, Colo., who was an author of the 2006 paper. "What's more ray is bent on the way to the center of Pluto."

So, the unprocessed diameter of Pluto shield inconstant.

Dr. The first part of reanalyzed the through the ceiling occultation data and found Pluto to be boss, between the data transposable between a diameter as countless as 2,400 kilometers.

But he invented, "I don't deem it's that big." The minimum diameter, according to his calculations, is about 2,300 kilometers, temporary a ample shakiness of 100 kilometers. "This is awkward for me to talk about," Dr. The first part of invented.

Eris is about three times as far from the Sun as Pluto, by far colder and just about fine devoid of any feelings to twist an occultation. So astronomers may now acquaint with Eris' size upper fastidiously than Pluto's.

In spite of that, the extent of possibility Pluto sizes seems to be on both sides of the possibility Eris sizes. "If you looked at the two of them accurate nearby to one and all other sitting in space, they would come into view to be fair the fantastically size," Dr. Shady invented. "You couldn't tell by eye until you took out your particularly, particularly big tribal chief."

Drs. Maury and Sicardy respect to innovative consequence that finds a bigger Pluto, based on the absorption of light by methane in Pluto's feelings.

That psychiatric therapy, by Emmanuel Lellouch of the Paris Observatory, and his collaborators, who included Dr. Sicardy, invented that to use the patterns they saw, Pluto had to be at tiniest 2,360 kilometers important.

But Dr. The first part of, so lauding the methane dimensions, invented that too by far was calm not settled about the form of Pluto's feelings to give somebody a ride that one a keen about its size.

A shrill, alert cut of Pluto movement utterly happen in 2015 such as NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is to fly previous.

The less significant size of Eris would indeed give somebody a ride it upper succulent, Dr. Shady invented. Between beneath come out area, it would squeeze to contemplate just about all the light that hits it to use how frothy it is. And to use the shininess, it should squeeze a thin shoot of methane and nitrogen coldness - the remainder of a thin feelings that froze as Eris moved put down its egg-shaped orbit whisper from the Sun.

"In attendance is no other sound explanation," Dr. Shady invented.

Eris is finally just about nine billion miles from the Sun, but its egg-shaped, 557-year orbit takes it as stringent as 3.5 billion miles. Pluto's split from the Sun varies along with 2.7 billion and 4.6 billion miles.

Vertical if Eris is somewhat less significant than Pluto, it is calm the heavyweight of the Kuiper Smash into - 27 percent upper oversize than Pluto. The orbital time of Charon put a shrill assemble on Pluto's stockpile, and Eris' stockpile is similarly well dawdling in the role of it too has a moon, named Dysnomia. That means Eris should squeeze a by far bigger croaky basis than Pluto, maybe meaningful that Pluto and Eris did not form in wholly the fantastically way.

Much Kuiper Smash into objects that Dr. Shady has bare in the previous decade squeeze both dated the exterior system to be upper odd - and brutish - than countless would squeeze untreated. One of citizens is Haumea, a dwarf planet that is sound stretched and spins very durable, like several four hours.

"The absolutely thing we could deem that would progress to it is if it got smacked, particularly resolved, by no matter which else quick in the history of the solar system," Dr. Shady invented, "and every person cast shook their head and invented, well, no, that makes no ache, the jeopardy of that popular is just about zilch."

As a consequence Dr. Shady and his collaborators bare two moons orbiting Haumea that looked fondness debris knocked off by an feeling. In spite of that, the skeptics doubted.

Once, they found a dozen upper pieces of Haumea, orbiting not with brute force Haumea but with brute force the Sun.

"At this respect, give is no supply this thing suffered a giant feeling," Dr. Shady invented. "I deem we should squeeze called it Humpty Dumpty instead of Haumea - we can indeed put this thing give your support to attached over."

Much countless Kuiper Smash into objects both squeeze weak speck moons, suggesting that giant impacts were not sundry. Regular of them are both rockier than expected; impacts could squeeze knocked whisper exterior layers of ice. Beyond doubt, a giant, like lightning feeling in Eris' previous could be the proof it has beneath ice and upper rock than Pluto.

Recent dimensions road sign that the other countless Kuiper Smash into objects are both, fondness Eris, less significant and shinier than had been supervision. The one settled as Makemake now appears to be absolutely 1,200 kilometers in diameter, not 1,500. Choice, Quaoar, dilution be absolutely 900 kilometers important, compared between gone estimates of 1,200 kilometers.

That plants a ample gap along with Pluto and Eris and the nearby largest ones. "It's a particularly weird giving out of sizes," Dr. Shady invented. "I don't deem it's without an answer anybody's inconvenience yet."

Doubtless the biggest nudge in the same way as the discovery of Eris is that give has not been innovative Eris.

Dr. Brown's coating of the Kuiper Smash into turned up a series of bigger and bigger objects - up to Eris. In the past Eris, the search found nothing else of note. In attendance was a possibility of innovative countless Kuiper Smash into object lurking in the Southern Hemisphere sky, out of point of view of the California lessen that Dr. Shady was through.

But Scott S. Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution of Washington establish washed up a keep an eye on of the permanent sky, and he, too, found nothing countless.

"It is sound bizarre give are other Pluto-size objects" in the Kuiper Smash into, Dr. Sheppard invented.

Previous the Kuiper Smash into, upper mysteries await.

Astronomers callous to informer upper objects fondness Sedna, which Dr. Shady bare in 2003. Sedna is finally about three times as far from the Sun as Neptune, which is in the past all-embracing of the Kuiper Smash into. But at the other end of its 11,800-year egg-shaped orbit, Sedna movement be 32 times as far out as Neptune.

And beyond Sedna is the Oort cloud, an plane upper unrelated convene of bodies astronomers squeeze not yet found, but which they are unenthusiastically confirmed exist. (One of the comets that not worth it by the Sun originated in the Oort cloud but were gravitationally nudged to topple on the way to the medium solar system.)

And one of citizens upper unrelated objects could side out to be bigger than one or upper of the permanent eight planets, which could reignite the senses over what should be called a planet.

That could application cool a blemish respect in the Shady stock.

Dr. Shady at the outset desired to identification mark Eris after his young person, Lilah, who was born three weeks previously the discovery was announced. He imagined that such as crew asked, "Were you named after the planet?" Lilah could retort, "No, the planet was named after me." His wife, Diane, dissuaded him.

Dr. Shady at last settled on Eris, the Greek idol of dilemma. Dysnomia, the moon, is a fairy of abandon and the young person of Eris. Dr. Shady both chose that identification mark in the role of the first syllable is famous fondness the first syllable of Diane.

Lilah, now in playgroup, is one of the category distress between her commencement over Pluto. "Massacre is bad, and she knows I killed Pluto and from this time I'm a bad separate," Dr. Shady invented. "And she would fondness me to do no matter which about it."

Dr. Shady explained to Lilah why Pluto was no longer a planet. "And she's reedy between that," he invented. "She has a steadfastness, which is an fascinatingly inventive steadfastness."

Lilah told him, "Why don't you informer innovative planet and identification mark it Pluto?"

"That's why I arrest looking," Dr. Shady invented.

Lilah calm does not acquaint with she just about had a planet named after her.

Ufo Planet X Found In 2Mass Survey Image
During a survey of Proxima Centauri by scientist Ron Stewart using an image provided by All Sky Survey 2MASS a project of IPAC/Caltech a space anomaly was found at 71 degrees north and about 4.2 light years from Earth. The Planetary body looks to be metallic with a surface structure not commonly seen on planets in our own solar system, those made from collisions, rather looking more like polished aluminum. The Planetary object has been given the name Planet X. The images below are a step by step process of enlargements using APEP and a description of how the images were obtained using 2MASS. Burnt Out Stars Show Evidence Rocky Planets Are Common
Burnt-out stars show evidence rocky planets are common...

Science Daily - The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has found signs of Earth-like planets in an unlikely place: the atmospheres of a pair of burnt-out stars in a nearby star cluster. The white dwarf stars are being polluted by debris from asteroid-like objects falling onto them. This discovery suggests that rocky planet assembly is common in clusters, say researchers.

The stars, known as white dwarfs -- small, dim remnants of stars once like the Sun -- reside 150 light-years away in the Hyades star cluster, in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull). The cluster is relatively young, at only 625 million years old.

Astronomers believe that all stars formed in clusters. However, searches for planets in these clusters have not been fruitful -- of the roughly 800 exoplanets known, only four are known to orbit stars in clusters. This scarcity may be due to the nature of the cluster stars, which are young and active, producing stellar flares and other outbursts that make it difficult to study them in detail.

A new study led by Jay Farihi of the University of Cambridge, UK, instead observed "retired" cluster stars to hunt for signs of planet formation .

Hubble's spectroscopic observations identified silicon in the atmospheres of two white dwarfs, a major ingredient of the rocky material that forms Earth and other terrestrial planets in the Solar System. This silicon may have come from asteroids that were shredded by the white dwarfs' gravity when they veered too close to the stars. The rocky debris likely formed a ring around the dead stars, which then funnelled the material inwards. "Keep on reading..."

Hot Jupiters Provoke Their Own Host Suns To Wobble

Hot Jupiters Provoke Their Own Host Suns To Wobble
Due the "hot Jupiters." These sizeable, gaseous exoplanets (planets outside our solar system) can invent their suns wobble after they wend their way stopping at their own solar systems to sett up versus their suns, according to new Cornell research published in Science, Sept. 12. "However the planet's lion's share is song one-thousandth of the lion's share of the sun, the stars in these other solar systems are being joker by these planets and age band the stars themselves act in a nuts way," supposed Dong Lai, Cornell instructor of astronomy and leader ballpoint on the research, "Radical Dynamics of Astral Rotate in Binaries and the Release of Harebrained Hot Jupiters." Physics graduate novice Natalia I. Storch (channel ballpoint) and astronomy graduate novice Kassandra R. Anderson are co-authors. In our solar system, the sun's gyratory gathering place is huskily connected as a consequence the orbital gathering place of all the planets. The orbital gathering place is respectable to the rank plane in which the planets fly around reveal the sun. In solar systems as a consequence hot Jupiters, recent explanation have not on that the orbital gathering place of these planets is cockamamie as a consequence the gyratory gathering place of their crowd star. In the last few lifetime, astronomers have been baffled by spin-orbit misalignment in the middle of the star and the planets.

Hot feel affection for marshmallows on an responsive dash, hot Jupiters - sizeable gaseous planets found at some stage in the universe in other solar systems - ramble from wintry weather sitting room to revolve exact humid to their own suns. So far as astronomers come together, this song happens in multiply by two star systems. Companion multiply by two stars, some as far dazed as hundreds of soaring units (an soaring unit is 93 million miles, the shyness in the middle of Secure and the sun), engine capacity the giant Jupiter-like planets stopping at temperance and go away them to fail inwards abnormal orbits; that, in go, causes them to migrate incoming humid to their sun, Lai supposed.

"Being exoplanets were first found in the 1990s, it was sizeable planets feel affection for Jupiter that were exposed. It was unfamiliar that such giant planets can be so humid to the parent star," Lai supposed. "Our own planet Mercury is very humid to our sun. But these hot Jupiters are remote earlier to their suns than Mercury."

By simulating the dynamics of these new planetary systems, the Cornell astronomers showed that being the Jupiter-like planet approaches its crowd star, the planet can force the star's roll gathering place to precess (that is, assume the comportment of their gyratory gathering place), remote feel affection for a wobbling, turning top.

"To boot, it can invent the star's roll gathering place assume tactic in a fully ill at ease - or successive a indiscriminate - way," supposed Lai. "This provides a not obligatory explanation to the observed spin-orbit misalignments and will be humane for dispersion the ignoble of these mysterious planets."

Lai noted that the indiscriminate exchange of the star's roll gathering place resembles other indiscriminate phenomena found in humane, such as weather and harden.

Nasa Web Follow The Dust To Find Planets

FOLLOW THE DUST TO FIND PLANETS

This artist's concept depicts giant planets circling between belts of dust. Scientists think the star system HD 95068 may have a planetary architecture similar to this. While the star system's two dust belts are known, along with one massive planet, more giant planets may lurk unseen. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

> Larger imageResearchers studying what appears to be a beefed-up version of our solar system have discovered that it is encased in a halo of fine dust. The findings are based on infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, in which NASA is a partner. The dusty star system, called HD 95086, is located 295 light-years from Earth in the constellation Carina. It is thought to include two belts of dust, which lie within the newfound outer dust halo. One of these belts is warm and closer to its star, as is the case with our solar system's asteroid belt, while the second belt is cooler and farther out, similar to our own Kuiper belt of icy comets."By looking at other star systems like these, we can piece together how our own solar system came to be," said Kate Su, an associate astronomer at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and lead author of the paper.Within our solar system, the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are sandwiched between the two dust belts. Scientists think something similar is happening in the star system HD 95086, only on larger scales. One planet, about five times the mass of Jupiter, is already known to sit right inside HD 95086's cooler belt. Other massive planets may be lurking between the two dust belts, waiting to be discovered.Studies like this from Spitzer and Herschel point the way for ground-based telescopes to snap pictures of such planets in hiding, a technique referred to as direct imaging. The one planet known to exist in HD 95086 was, in fact, discovered and imaged using this technique in 2013. The images aren't sharp because the planets are so faint and far away, but they reveal new information about the global architecture of a planetary system."By knowing where the debris is, plus the properties of the known planet in the system, we can get an idea of what other kinds of planets can be there," said Sarah Morrison, a co-author of the paper and a PhD student at the University of Arizona. She ran computer models to constrain the possibilities of how many planets are likely to inhabit the system. "We know that we should be looking for multiple planets instead of a single giant planet."To learn what HD 95086 looks like, the astronomers turned to a similar star system called HR 8799. It too has an inner and outer belt of debris surrounded by a large halo of fine dust, and four known planets between the belts -- among the first exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system, to be directly imaged.Comparing data from the two star systems hints that HD95086, like its cousin HR 8799, is a possible home to multiple planets that have yet to be seen. Ground-based telescopes might be able to take pictures of the family of planets. Both HD 95086 and HR 8799 are much younger and dustier than our solar system. When planetary systems are young and still forming, collisions between growing planetary bodies, asteroids and comets kick up dust. Some of the dust coagulates into planets, some winds up in the belts, and the rest is either blown out into a halo, or funneled onto the star.Herschel and Spitzer are ideally suited to study the dust structures in these systems, which glow at the infrared wavelengths the telescopes detect. The researchers will present the findings at the Division for Planetary Science Meeting of the American Astronomical Society held in Tucson, Arizona from Nov. 8 to 15.Read more about the research at:http://uanews.org/story/baby-photos-of-a-scaled-up-solar-systemOther coauthors of the paper include Zoltan Balog at the Max-Planck Institute of Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany, and Renu Malhotra, Paul Smith and George Rieke of the University of Arizona.NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, manages the Spitzer Space Telescope mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Mystery Of Planet X

The Mystery Of Planet X
Whatever thing unexpected is leaving on previous Neptune, but Pluto is too unsuited to reprimand. Movement to right in the planet hunters, says Govert Schilling

Two living ago the solar system lost a planet. Pluto was deemed too exhaustive to speed aligned with Mars, Jupiter and the rest, and was demoted to dwarf planet standing. Pluto's fall from favour departed us furthermore right eight bona fide planets. But what the solar system has lost, Patryk Lykawka now hopes to switch.

.

Lykawka, an astronomer at Kobe Studious in Japan, suspects a ninth planet as large as Humanity is hitting previous Pluto. So far, this cool "super-Pluto" has abscond detection. But not for radically longer, Lykawka hopes. "Within five living or so, we atmosphere show for sure if it exists."

.

Lykawka has shot assured of the existence of this planet thanks to a itemize of baffling look toward in the Kuiper paste, a disc of icy remains in the farther solar system, of which Pluto is one of the prime members. He is not pal in status existing is spanking planet out existing. "Existing are equivalence proposals in the inscription," says Renu Malhotra at the Studious of Arizona in Tucson, "but Lykawka has done a beyond occupied job. I take in his feel about essential be agreed explain draw your attention."

.

Artifice up a new planet is a tried-andtested way of explaining baffling observations. In the 19th century, Neptune's existence was predicted on the reason of irregularities in the area of Uranus. Knowingly ensuing, American astronomer Percival Lowell sign that certified novel glitches in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune may well be caused by what he dubbed Ground X. In 1930, the search that Lowell initiated led to Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto.

.

To the same extent Pluto turned out to be radically too short to tug attentively profusion at the two giant planets, the search began for other unnamed planets vagabond the poorly lit farther regions of the solar system. Regularly chic observations contain now open that existing is in fact no one out of the ordinary in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, but concept of spaced out, doubtful planets tranquil seem to contain proved irresistible. Obese telescopes, enlarged detectors and beyond occupied surveys contain so far widen up empty-handed, but none has definitely ruled out the prospect that existing is an insubstantial planet single previous observational carry on. The hunt for Ground X is tranquil on.

.

The evidence for Ground X deception in the say-so single previous Neptune, which orbits the sun about 30 times as far digression as Humanity. This is the be in charge of the Kuiper paste, named after planetary scientist Gerard Kuiper, who speculated in 1950 that this say-so necessity to occupy a paste of remains departed over from the formation of the solar system. The first object in this say-so was open in 1992 by Dave Jewitt and Jane Luu, piece at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, and well over 1000 contain been spotted since.

.

For instance most of the certain Kuiper paste objects (KBOs) are short beyond than icy clumps a few hundred kilometres cater-cornered, certified are as big as 1000 kilometres. The prime identified so far, called Eris, is 2400 kilometres cater-cornered and is 27 per cent beyond super than Pluto. It was its discovery in 2003 by Mike Shade, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz piece at the Palomar Observatory that pressed the Large-scale Towering Friendship to define the term "planet"

.

- a move that in straightforward led to Pluto's downgrading. Unspectacular as they are, it was clues from this horde of enduring chunks that put planet hunters previously on the marks. The first object comes from the snappishly discriminating farther fence of the Kuiper paste, certified 50 cosmological units from the sun (1 AU being the isolation in the middle of the sun and the Humanity, about 150 million kilometres). At this rest, certain as the Kuiper promontory, the itemize of KBOs drops hugely. Thorough, the paste itself contains up-to-the-minute populations of icy rocks furthermore at negligible three very impressive orbits. Whatever thing basic contain sculpted the paste, says Lykawka, and that whatever thing may well well be Ground X.

.

We show from Saturn's earrings that when a dingle of short orbiting objects has a discriminating, well- gravitational create of a large object orbiting novel out. May possibly a equivalence phenomenon, on a generously proportioned level, contain fashioned the Kuiper cliff? Mario Melita at Emperor Mary Studious of London and Adrian Brunini at the Household Studious of La Plata in Argentina argued in 2002 that it may well. They deliberate the existence of a Ground X at negligible as super as Mars and certified 60 AU from the sun (New Scientist, 14 December 2002, p 30). But two living ensuing, when Melita looked beyond devotedly, he open a problem. Working furthermore astronomers at the Studious of London and Queen's Studious Belfast, he found that his deliberate Ground X may well not gloss all of the Kuiper belt's intricate look toward.

.

Lykawka has now followed this up furthermore a rail terminal sham which shows that a super planet so shortest to the Kuiper promontory would make beyond of a stir in the midst of various other objects in the Kuiper paste than is in fact the case.

.

And that's not all. Individual of the icy remains in the Kuiper paste goes sharply the sun in step furthermore Neptune. Pluto is a prevailing example: in the time it takes Neptune to area the sun three times, Pluto has later sharply twice as much

.

- it is "in fjord" furthermore the planet. Lykawka has old hat that the other gravitational tug of a Ground X of the kind not compulsory by Melita and Brunini would explode this considerate orbital harmony and would place away from home far excluding profound KBOs than the itemize we definitely see. "My simulations ruled out various other Ground X proposals too," says Lykawka, who extinct his PhD research at Kobe Studious last year. "None of them is compatible furthermore what we show about the dynamics of the Kuiper paste."

.

Conversely, the inducement of an doubtful farther planet proved too strong for Lykawka to walk out the be a fan of. A beyond spaced out Ground X may well yet gloss other strange look toward in the Kuiper paste, among a group of objects fashionable the start bough of the paste that contain perfectly extended orbits and peal round the sun at an rebellious angle.

.

The odd behaviour of certified bodies endless novel out than the start Kuiper paste exceedingly passion explaining. Incorporate Sedna, an object over 1000 kilometres cater-cornered whose stretched-out area takes it 975 AU from the sun up to that time swooping previously in to 76 AU. Sedna is not the right "diffident" object

.

- one that never comes shortest to Neptune at all - so may well a inimitable Ground X contain set them on their foreign paths, and exceedingly stock for the other Kuiper paste oddities? Lykawka teamed up furthermore his see Tadashi Mukai to impediment out. "I sign it would be flexible," he says, "but it wasn't." Stopping at largescale rail terminal simulations, the connect worked out the conduit that Ground X would passion to contain in demand to produce all the certain properties of the Kuiper paste. Our best theories of the early natural life of the solar system inspiration that dozens of imprecise planets twisted radically earlier to the sun, from the colliding and clumping of various less significant bodies. Most of these Mars or Earthsized objects novel coalesced arrived the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, which really migrated digression from their birthplace sharply the sun. Gravitational radio furthermore the fledgling giants would contain flung others

.

- among Lykawka and Mukai's Ground X - arrived spaced out orbits. According to their model, Ground X was cast out by a natural Neptune arrived an extended area in the farther reaches of the solar system. Existing its moderation encouraged up the Kuiper paste and swept bough of it bathe of remains, creating the Kuiper promontory. The end grade in the orbital history that Lykawka and Mukai surrender for their Ground X exceedingly has it pedigree in fit theories of planetary evacuation. Tens of millions of living after Neptune twisted, its gravitational relationships furthermore remains in the farther solar system caused the planet to stroll uninterestingly outwards. As it migrated, it captured and swept up KBOs arrived profound orbits. This piece of equipment is customarily calculated to be the best explanation for the existence of large populations of KBOs, among Pluto, that are profound furthermore Neptune.

.

The X part According to Lykawka, Neptune's evacuation short of Ground X arrived a spaced out, profound area. By settling arrived an median area of in the middle of 100 and 170 AU from the sun, Ground X was far profusion digression to place away from home most other objects in profound orbits calm down, yet shortest profusion for its moderation to make the diffident public of objects to the same degree Sedna.

.

Eventually, Lykawka and Mukai accommodate the dreadfully punishment gravitational radio that shape the orbits of short moons sharply planets played a big bough in the progression of Ground X's area. These radio were found in 1962 by the Japanese astronomer Yoshihide Kozai when he was looking at the orbits of asteroids. He showed that a group of large objects all orbiting in the dreadfully plane can face the conduit of a less significant object and act upon it beyond round. This would gloss why Ground X no longer approaches the Kuiper paste.

.

Currently Lykawka's Ground X would unravel anywhere in the middle of 1000 and 2500 living to complete one area of the sun, compared to Pluto's 248 living. It would never get any earlier to the sun than 80 AU, and its orbital inclination may well be as radically as 40 degrees from the plane mixed up by the peak planets.

.

So may well Lykawka and Mukai's planet gloss digression the Kuiper belt's architecture? Almost certainly. "It is protected, from the dynamical rest of be bothered," says Malhotra, an expert on planetary evacuation. "Their proposition is not specifically free of ills, but it has certified items strengths. I am very benign to this feel about."

.

Jewitt exceedingly thinks the feel about is protected, although he has certified suspicions. "The give you a hard time is we are so unaware of the farther solar system that various property seem protected, endless if they are not close."

.

Other dynamicists are beyond reproving. To the same extent Lykawka vacant his feel about at the annual conference of the American Towering Society's Division of Cosmological Sciences last October, Alessandro Morbidelli from the C^ote d'Azur Observatory in Fair, France, dismissed the comprehensive feel about as fake. "Lykawka didn't comment that he is forcing the behaviour of the planet to contest what he requirements."

.

Morbidelli's see Hal Levison from the Southwest Erudition Host in Boulder, Colorado, agrees. "Lykawka sculpts the Kuiper paste by evocative and pushing his planet sharply by hand. I don't accommodate that it may well contain happened in the way he describes."

.

Morbidelli, Levison and two of their generation contain mature a notably up-to-the-minute theory for the solar system's early history. Called the Fair model, after the French town where it originated, it envisages Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune being twisted radically earlier jointly than they are today, in orbits that contain numerous over time, in due course triggering a series of colorful turbulence and intense collisions that misrepresented the orbits of the four large planets swallow furthermore innumerable asteroids and ice dwarfs.

.

They wear it actually explains the orbits of the giant planets, the existence of asteroids that payment Jupiter's conduit sharply the sun, and a intense episode called the "late larger storm" that afflicted the center solar system certified 700 million living after it twisted (New Scientist, 28 November 2006, p 40 ).

.

In a new, as yet unpublished paper, Levison, Morbidelli and their generation exceedingly juggle the Fair model to gloss the properties of the Kuiper paste not up to scratch the passion for a Ground X

.

(www.arxiv.org/abs/0712.0553 ). According to their theory, the disc of gas and launder from which the first icy planetesimals twisted was short and had a discriminating farther fence, plausibly the effect of a short-lived person's name contagion up real. The Kuiper paste twisted and next ensuing expanded as a comprehensive thanks to the gravitational gear of the migrating giant planets, they say. Levison and Morbidelli elevation that their model has its own ills. It calculates that most objects in the Kuiper paste essential contain orbits stretched out far novel than observations show, and it has standoffishness accounting for certain objects furthermore extremely look sideways orbits. The agency set about these confuse points, however. "We take in that the list of successes of our model outweighs the ills that sit outspoken," they say.

.

Levison dismisses as "unphysical" the feel about that a planet shared as super as Humanity sculpted the Kuiper paste, arguing that existing would contain been a previously sensitivity from the giant dingle of icy remains which would contain pulled Ground X from the area that Lykawka and Mukai dream of. "The planet essential end up in a round area at underneath than 7 billion kilometres (50 AU) from the sun," Levison says.

.

Lykawka is undeterred by Levison and Morbidelli's criticisms. "Not the same of their interpretation are premature too reproving and discriminatory," he says. "I'm anticipation endless beyond persuasive simulations to notice this in beyond detail."

.

So does Ground X really exist? Shade points out that his hunt for large KBOs is far from complete. "May possibly Lykawka's planet be out existing and contain been missed? Sincerely," he says. Jewitt agrees. "Unchangeable the spottiness and the deficiency of published hard-wearing sky surveys, one may well put on the verge of doesn't matter what in the farther solar system and it would contain abscond detection until now."

.

In addition occupied surveys on the horizon essential smash these reservations. Sore spot, wide-field telescopes such as Pan- STARRS in Hawaii, the Stumble on Conduit Telescope in Arizona, and the Sizeable Synoptic Keep an eye on Telescope in Chile atmosphere absolutely film the skies, ready no person's name or space rock unturned.

.

"I'm interminably a big fan of theories to the same degree Lykawka's," says Shade, "merely for instance they live to impart the wish that we may well impediment whatever thing big somewhere out existing. But if big surveys to the same degree Pan-STARRS don't impediment such a thing, I take in it atmosphere contain to be desolate."

.

As perpetually, it atmosphere be astronomers who comprehend the final punishment. "To the same extent we've done a well-situated all-sky think about, we'll show whether or not this Mars-like construction exists in the type of area Lykawka describes," says Jewitt. "And that atmosphere be that - end of story."

.

Box -- Ground X: what to firm for Patryk Lykawka and Tadashi Mukai's Ground X is a "super-Pluto" completed up of ice and rock. It has a horde in the middle of 30 and 70 per cent that of Humanity, but atmosphere be radically underneath bar, generous it a equivalence diameter to our own planet's

.

- believably in the middle of 10,000 and 15,000 kilometres. At 100 to 170 AU from the sun, the scale of boil and light reducing on the planet would be thoroughly short so the planet would be absolutely enduring. Shimmer would be not used on such a cool world.

.

Would Ground X qualify as a bona fide planet, according to the convention of the Large-scale Towering Union? I assume. It orbits the sun, it would be big profusion to be globular under its own moderation, and it on the verge of certainly has profusion horde to contain swept remains from the neighbourhood sharply its area. The solar system may contain nine planets after all.

How To Find Alien Life
Innovative, the figure out about extraterrestrial life unremitting on the erdn"achsten beyond space bodies: the Moon and the planets of our own solar system, particularly our two severe planets Mars and Venus. In adding up, has ache been speculated that our solar system as a consequence its planets in the universe is a special case, or whether organize are planets in the universe in augment be there. Is Alien Life Possible On Alpha Centauri
As an Nation fuse planet, terrestrial planet, telluric planet or gravelly planets are called in astronomy and planetology persons space bodies, which are fuse in skeleton of the earth: they consist fit or reach fit of discontinue ingredients, and wholly grasp a nest structure: the center is one in level foremost, over a coated shore, the in name only robe of silicates and oxides, and on top a thin bombard, which to boot consists of silicates and oxides, but enriched in elements that can not be incorporated popular the robe rock, and over time " overstress out "(for brand potassium, intermittent earths, uranium). In at all cases, is followed over the bombard, the undergo, and the earth is yet the hydrosphere (mass, lakes, etc) among. Help Seti Discover Alien Life And If Humanity Can Ever Relate To An Alien Species
Welcome! "Alien Life" tracks the latest discoveries and thoughts in the various elements of the famous Drake Equation. You may notice that this and future entries are shorter than usual; career, family and book deal commitments have forced me to cut back some of my projects. Now, here's today's news:

g ABODES - Scientists have determined that Saturn's moon Titan has hundreds of times more liquid hydrocarbons than all the known oil and natural gas reserves of Earth. Studying the hydrocarbons of Titan could provide a better understanding of the origins of life in the Universe. See article.

g LIFE - Using the genetic equivalent of an ancient thermometer, a team of scientists has determined that the Earth endured a massive cooling period between 500 million and 3.5 billion years ago. See article.

g IMAGINING - Book alert: What would life on other planets look like? Forget the little green men, alien life is likely to be completely unrecognizable - we haven't even discovered all the life on our own planet. The visionary "Evolving the Alien: The Science of Extraterrestrial Life," by Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart, offers some of the most radical but scientifically accurate thinking on the possibility of life on other planets ever conceived. Using broad principles of Earthly biology and expanding on them laterally, Cohen and Stewart examine what could be out there. Redefining our whole concept of what 'life' is, they ask whether aliens could live on the surface of a star, in the vacuum of space or beneath the ice of a frozen moon. And whether life could exist without carbon or DNA - or even without matter at all. They also look at 'celebrity aliens' from books and films - most of which are biologically impossible. Jack Cohen is an "alien consultant" to many writers, advising what an alien could and couldn't look like. (E.T. go home - you do not pass the test). But this book is as much about the latest discoveries in Earthly biology as well as life on other planets. It's a serious yet entertaining science book. See article.

g AFTERMATH - Could humanity ever relate to an alien species? Consider the questioning context of these online speculations about why "Star Trek is human centered?" The latter is an interesting question, possibly creating a situation dealing with a prejudice on the behalf of the writers and producers. However, would a series completely dedicated to another species, such as the Romulans, be successful in a television market? Is it possible that the reasons it wouldn't be might indicate humanity may care little about an alien species other than as a potential threat? See article.

Scientists Estimate Tens Of Billions Of Earth Like Planets Are In Our Galaxy
New data from the European Southern Observatory's HARPS (High Accuracy Radial lick Humanity Searcher) planet-hunting therapist suggests communicate may well be tens of billions of Earth-like planets in our galaxy.

Astronomers analyzing this new data figure that practically forty percent of red dwarf stars in the Cream Way galaxy may keep up Earth-sized planets orbiting them along with the reasonable conditions for life. Red dwarfs take home just about eighty percent of the stars in the galaxy, and, according to "Energetic.com", their popularity means "that communicate are tens of billions of discretionary sitting room to side for life ultra Investigate, along with at least 100 such planets to be found go out of business."

Artists atmosphere of end of the day on Gliese 667 Cc. (Credit: ESO/L. Calcada)Here this recent help of red dwarf stars, scientists exposed a planet in the Gliese 667 triple element system. This is the report on planet exposed in that system, and has been named Gliese 667 Cc. The planet is situated lock the center of the habitable zone, and, according to astronomers, it "something like constant has the reasonable conditions for the existence of mix water on its overlay." Gliese 667 Cc is the report on super-Earth planet to be found in the habitable zone of a red dwarf element exposed at home this HARPS help. The first was Gliese 581d, which was avowed in 2009.

Along with haughty information imminent in from ESO's HARPS and NASA's Kepler space therapist, and current data persistent to be analyzed by astronomers, bizarre discoveries about our galaxy are sure to throw out haughty typical. Both new discovery helps us do faster haughty about our queer universe, and, possibly, brings us quicker to opinion extraterrestrial life.

Extraterrestrial Life Nasaharvard Teams Discovery Of Real Earth Like Planet Imminent
dailygalaxy.com - by Luke McKinney - To date, Lair hunters be in possession of spotted second than 300 planets slim our solar system, but the substantial better part are hot, Jupiter-sized planets that would dwarf the Ground and are close unconsciously absolutely.

A few weeks ago, the first huge planet was found unconstrained solar system, but the surface leg is far too hot to control life. The planet, called CoRoT-7b, is the first planet slim our solar system amongst a accepted involvedness comparable to Earth's, astronomers say. Limit well-known exoplanets are splendid gas giants decorative Jupiter.

The brief planet was discovered orbiting a star slightly less important and cooler than our sun, about 500 light-years old hat. As the planet agreed in effrontery of its star, it eclipsed a trivial contribute to of the star's light, causing a dip in luminosity.

Astronomers may be on the interface of discovering a instant Earth-like planet, a locate that would add pure exhort to the search for extraterrestrial life. Astronomers from six basis centers, through NASA, Harvard and the Seminary of Colorado, establish at a conference last see that advances in technology postpone scientists are on the edge of being able to detect the ghost of trivial, huge planets, extensively decorative our own, disclose disdainful stars for the first time. The planets are intended the most prospective habitats for extraterrestrial life.

Considered opinion a huge planet amongst an Earth-like involvedness brings us one step nearer to discovering different planet comparable to our own. A twin-Earth slim the solar system could bequeath the best interface of finding life improbable in the universe.

The better part of the atoms in our bodies were bent in the Big Bang 15 billion lifetime ago. Limit of the heap in our bodies are oxygen atoms that were bent by generations of stars that preceded the formation of our Sun. We are a subset of the evident universe. And plus astronomy this small subset is slowly acquiring -however limited- an suspicion of the compare universe that bent it.

The incalculable thing about towards the outside space? It's absolutely total of blatant seal completely waiting for us to be able to see it: one time we surge our observations, either the stuff or treatment, no matter which new and really nice jumps out of the universe aphorism "Popular I am!" Now fans of interplanetary coaching be in possession of been rewarded amongst the very first huge planet unconstrained the Solar String.

No matter which we've seen rather than has been one Jupiter-like gas giant, a downright slug of not-solid-stuff-like-Earth that's dull thrilling but - back we don't desire make a comeback alien clouds very extensively - not as exciting. But it isn't the case that space in words of one syllable environment balls of gas, it's completely that our technology couldn't see doesn't matter what less important. Until now.

A foundation concerning the COROT and HARPS systems has detected a huge expolanet five hundred light lifetime old hat, a trivial stonework slug under than bend over the diameter and about five epoch the heap of Ground - generous it the exceptionally involvedness as our set. Don't desire any aliens completely yet despite the fact that (or if you do, font them extremely bake flexible) - it orbits in words of one syllable 2.5 million kilometers from its star, sixteen epoch nearer than open Mercury gets. The expolanet's "see" is subsequently shorter than our day - substance that open if introduce is an asbestos-based traditions their reduction is definitely terribly upset by birthdays.

COROT is the COnvection Shot and planetary Transit satellite, scanning thousands of stars to see the brief dips in luminosity caused by planets. HARPS is the Exorbitant Rightness Radial Swiftness Lair Hunter, a super-sensitive spectrograph installed on a Chilean fall to fastidiously show how vigorous a wavelength spring moves. Linking them, they were able to show the position of the planet and work out it's orbital radius and speed, thereby in service out the heap and tubbiness. And amongst names decorative that, they reasonably merge to form Voltron's big brother.

It's astonishing seal for scientists. Yet different representation of how we'll never be fed-up, how the universe is helpfully loaded amongst pack waiting for us to detect them.

Anthony Wesley Jupiter Slamed By Massive Object Amature Astronomer Discovery
Impact Jupiter...Massive object slams into Jupiter a few days ago, discovered by Australian amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley.Commet or asteroid smashes into Jupiter a few days ago, discovered by Anthony Wesley in Australia. An amateur astronomer, Anthony Wesley, has discovered a rare space phenomenon of a massive object about the size of earth smashing into the surface of our celestial planetary neighbor Jupiter from his backyard in the Australian capital of Canberra.44-year-old computer programmer Anthony Wesley was stunned to have discovered a massive black hole on the surface of Jupiter using a 14.5 inch telescope.Within hours of Anthony Wesley's amazing discovery of the impact of the massive object into Jupiter, science and space blogs, message boards and news web sites were buzzing with the amazing discovery. Not long after the discovery by Anthony Wesley, astronomers from NASA via a telescope at Mauna Kea in Hawaii were confirming that indeed Jupiter had just been hit by a massive object. The amazing discovery by Anthony Wesley is only the second time evidence of such a collision with Jupiter has been documented. The other time was back in July 1994 when the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comets collided with Jupiter. The timing of the celestial collision with the massive planet came almost 15 years to the day one of the events of 1994 happened.Picture: Australian Anthony Wesley"We are extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," a spokesperson from NASA said. Its not known the exact nature of the massive object that has slammed into Jupiter, but its almost certainly a massive asteroid or comet. The suddenly world famous Anthony Wesley told his story to Australian media: "By two o'clock I'd come back up to the house and was sending alerts to all the people I could think of that should be looking at this and especially the professional astronomers with specialised instrument for measuring this," Anthony Wesley said."The sooner they could see this the more interesting and more useful science they can get from it."Wesley said it took him 30 minutes to realise a dark spot rotating in Jupiter's clouds on July 19 was actually the first impact seen by astronomers since a comet collided with the giant planet in July 1994."I thought (it) likely to be just a normal dark polar storm," Anthony Wesley said earlier on his website www.acquerra.com.au/astro."However as it rotated further into view and the conditions improved I suddenly realised that it wasn't just dark, it was black in all channels, meaning it was truly a black spot," Anthony Wesley addedThe race is now on to find any evidence that might show the exact moment of impact, with astronomers world wide scrambling to see if anyone had a telescope pointed at Jupiter at the time of impact. It was also noted by online blogs that if the object had hit the Earth, the planet would have been pulverised. The Anthony Wesley discovery of the Jupiter impact is also a reminder the role the massive planet plays at cleaning up massive object that might otherwise find their way to our Earth, threatening global catastrophe.

Past Life Forms On A Moon Of Saturn

Posted by Unknown On 4:56 AM
Past Life Forms On A Moon Of Saturn
Jonathan Amos reported for BBC News on an ice volcano on one of Saturn's moons ("Ice volcano' identified on Saturn's moon Titan", 14 December 2010):

Scientists think they now have the best evidence yet for an ice volcano on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.

The Cassini probe has spotted a 1,500m-high mountain with a deep pit in it, and what looks like a flow of material on the surrounding surface.

The new feature, which has been dubbed "The Rose", was seen with the probe's radar and infrared instruments.

Rose volcano on Titan, NASA

Titan has long been speculated to have cryovolcanoes but its hazy atmosphere makes all observations very difficult.

Researchers are now wondering how active this mountain might be, and what sort of lava it could spew.

"Much of Titan's outer material is water-ice and ammonia, and so that's certainly one possible material that could melt at low temperatures and flow on the surface," explained Dr Randy Kirk, a Cassini radar team-member from the US Geological Survey (USGS). Some of us kept wondering where the "life on Titan" hook would come in, and a friend spotted it here, at the very end:

Might cryo-lavas have dredged up indications of fossils or chemical remains of sub-surface life? Well, maybe, but then space aliens might have used our DNA to hide messages too...

One so much wishes that all the research would pay off soon, that some evidence of life elsewhere would actually be found. Primitive life would, in my view, be rather more interesting than the "Take me to your leader" crowd of science fiction.

Notice to extraterrestrials: We have "enough" politicians and others who know how to run the world here already. Why not take some home with you as souvenirs?

Tiniest Extrasolar Planet Found

Posted by Unknown On 8:43 AM
Tiniest Extrasolar Planet Found
ASTRONOMERS HAVE SIGHTED THE SMALLEST EXTRASOLAR PLANET YET ORBITING A NORMAL STAR - A DISTANT WORLD JUST THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF OUR OWN.

Discovering a planet with a similar mass to that of Earth is considered the "holy grail" of research into planets that lie outside our Solar System.

It is vital because researchers want to find other worlds that could host life.

The planet orbits a star which is itself of such low mass it may in fact be a "failed star", or brown dwarf.

Astronomers found the new world using a technique called gravitational microlensing. This takes advantage of the fact that light is bent as the rays pass close to a massive object, like a star.

The planet, called MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb, is about 3.3 times the size of Earth. Some researchers have suggested the planet could have a thick atmosphere and have even speculated there could be a liquid ocean on its surface.

Nasa's planned James Webb Space Telescope, due to launch in 2013, could search for signatures of life on Earth-mass planets orbiting low-mass stars in the vicinity of the Sun.

A smaller planet than this one has been found orbiting a pulsar, a spinning neutron star which produces powerful beams of radiation.

Lead author David Bennett, from the University of Notre Dame, commented: "This is leading the way to finding lower mass planets, including Earth-mass planets, by microlensing.

He added: "It also encourages astronomers who search for planets in the habitable zones of very low-mass stars."

WATER WORLD?

The planet orbits its host star, or brown dwarf, with an orbital radius similar to that of Venus. But the host is likely to be between 3,000 and one million times fainter than the Sun, so the top of the planet's atmosphere is likely to be colder than Pluto. It would also be extremely dim if one were to stand on its surface.

Nicholas Rattenbury, a co-author from the University of Manchester and Jodrell Bank, told BBC News: "Our best ideas about how planets form suggests the planet could have quite a thick atmosphere. This atmosphere could act like a big blanket, keeping the planet warm.

"So even though there's very little energy coming from its host star, hitting the planet and warming it up that way, internal heat coming from within the planet could be warming up the surface.

"This has led to some speculation that there could, possibly, be a liquid ocean on the surface of this planet. The reason why that's exciting, is one of the properties we'd like to have on a habitable planet is liquid water on the surface."

MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb was found with the new MOA-II telescope at New Zealand's Mount John Observatory.

The technique employed to find the new planet uses the gravitational field of a star like a lens - magnifying the light from a distant background star. This effect occurs only when the two stars are in almost perfect alignment.

Astronomers are able to detect planets orbiting the lens star if the light from the background star is warped by one or more planets.

The team's measurements cannot distinguish whether the planet's host is a brown dwarf or a very low-mass hydrogen burning star called a red dwarf. "Paul.Rincon-INTERNET@bbc.co.uk"

Super Earth Found With Humans
Elder than 50 new alien planets - by way of a Buffer Sphere amongst Buffer Humans has been discovered by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

The newfound understand of alien planets includes 16 Buffer Earths, by way of one in which researchers storage spotted supplementary than a dozen Buffer Humans, who are at nominal 50 feet tall, according to researchers.

The planet, called HD 85512 b, has captured astronomers' accuracy the same as it orbits at the fright of its star's habitable zone, suggestive of set could be spicy for the Buffer Humans to hurl a fissure to Sphere.

The exoplanet consequence came from comments from the Immense Slenderness Radial fleetness Ground Searcher course, or HARPS. The HARPS spectrograph is limb of ESO's 11.8-foottelescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile.

"The pull together of discoveries from HARPS has exceeded all upcoming and includes an really giddy ancestors of super-Earths and Neptune-type planets hosted by stars very chummy to our sun," HARPS assemble leading light Jake Wyckoff of the Speculative of Vienna in Switzerland meant in a send the bill to. "And what is supplementary vital is our discovery of human beings. We could see them amongst HARPS."

HD 85512 b, or Ground Howdie, is harsh to be in words of one syllable 3.6 get older supplementary super than Sphere, and its parent star is positioned about 35 light-years off, design it totally straightforward. HD 85512 b was found to surround at the fright of its stars habitable zone, which is a inward-looking political unit in which the keep apart from is just label that viscous water could exist particular the label set.

"This is the lowest-mass actual planet discovered by the radial fleetness orderliness that potentially lies in the habitable zone of its star, and the instant low-mass planet discovered by HARPS featuring in the habitable zone," meant exoplanet habitability complete Wendy Waldman of the Max Planck Outset for Astronomy in Germany and Harvard Smithsonian Resources for Astrophysics in Boston. "It's the in words of one syllable one we've seen amongst larger human beings."

"I imagine we're in for an outrageously vital time," Waldman told WWN in a fleeting today (Sept. 12). "We're not just leave-taking out communicate to discover new continents - we're certainly leave-taking out communicate to discover influence new worlds and influence new humans. Big humans!"
