Silicon Valley Goes To Space

A new generation of entrepreneurs - sprung from the high-risk, high-tech culture of Silicon Valley - is launching private, for-profit ventures to open up space for tourism, transportation, rapid earth imaging and even mining the moon. Its a far cry from the early days of space exploration, where NASA led the way, culminating in Neil Armstrongs first bold steps on the moon in July 1969.

Companies such as Virgin Galactic, which bills itself as the worlds first commercial spaceliner, and rocket maker SpaceX, which in 2012 became the first private company to deliver cargo to the International Space Station, are rapidly creating new commercial opportunities in an arena long believed to be out of reach to private companies.

But opening up space to lucrative, ambitious commercial ventures carries not only rewards, but also risks.

On October 31, Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo crashed during a test flight 25 miles north of the Mojave Air and Space Port, killing one of the two pilots.

"Space is hard and today was a tough day," said Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides at a press conference held a few hours later. Our future rests in many ways on hard days like this, but we believe we owe it to the folks who were flying these vehicles as well as the folks who have been working so hard on them to understand this and move forward, he said.

Just days earlier, an unmanned rocket owned by another company, Orbital Sciences, and re-supplying the International Space Station, exploded in Virginia shortly after takf.

Space industry leaders say the industry will rebound, and already has significant accomplishments in recent years.

More than 700 people have put down deposits for a 250,000 rocketship ride into the edge of space with Virgin Galactic that had been expected as soon as 2015, for example. In September, SpaceX completed its fourth successful resupply mission to the space station, returning with nearly 4,000 pounds of science experiments and cargo. The company hopes to eventually transport astronauts to the space station, for considerably cheaper than the 70 million NASA has had to pay the Russians for astronaut transport since the retirement of the Space Shuttle. Other entrepreneurs have announced plans to land on the moon or even Mars in the coming decades.

Dwarf planet Ceres continues to puzzle scientists as NASA's Dawn spacecraft gets closer to being captured into orbit around the object. The latest images from Dawn, taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres, reveal that a bright spot that stands out in previous images lies close to yet another bright area.

"Ceres' bright spot can now be seen to have a companion of lesser brightness, but apparently in the same basin. This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations," said Chris Russell, principal investigator for the Dawn mission, based at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Using its ion propulsion system, Dawn will enter orbit around Ceres on March 6. As scientists receive better and better views of the dwarf planet over the next 16 months, they hope to gain a deeper understanding of its origin and evolution by studying its surface. The intriguing bright spots and other interesting features of this captivating world will come into sharper focus.

"The brightest spot continues to be too small to resolve with our camera, but despite its size it is brighter than anything else on Ceres. This is truly unexpected and still a mystery to us," said Andreas Nathues, lead investigator for the framing camera team at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Gottingen, Germany.

Dawn visited the giant asteroid Vesta from 2011 to 2012, delivering more than 30,000 images of the body along with many other measurements, and providing insights about its composition and geological history. Vesta has an average diameter of 326 miles (525 kilometers), while Ceres has an average diameter of 590 miles (950 kilometers). Vesta and Ceres are the two most massive bodies in the asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter.

I came across an old report I had from 1999 from Arizona from a woman my husband and I met on vacation who saw what she called a "chupacabra" on the highway (US 90) between Bisbee and Tucson. It made me think of the recent Denver sightings because it had a canine head with a "dog nose" but it also had wings and a long tail that forked at the end. She had another person in the car who also saw it - they were on their way home from a real estate conference. She said its legs were tucked under its body as it sat.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE BLACK HELICOPTER PHENOMENON?

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE STRANGE ENIGMA COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE BLACK HELICOPTER PHENOMENON, OR BHP FOR SHORT.

FOR DECADES, THESE STRANGE, UNMARKED AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN SEEN FLYING THROUGH THE AIR IN A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES INCLUDING THE USA, FRANCE AND THE UK.

I WAS ONCE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SEE THREE OF THEM MYSELF.

Nothing is known about the origin of black helicopters or their purpose, although rumours abound.

One common denominator is that none of them seem to bear the legally-required registration marks, which is in itself disturbing.

So, just what do we know about black helicopters?

Well, we know that although they can appear at any time of day or night the most popular time seems to be around dusk.

Often they will travel in flights of two or three, although on some occasions up to 20 have been reported.

Sometimes they will fly at high speed on a straight trajectory.

On other occasions they will circle a specific area, as if looking for something.

Another observation made by witnesses is that they often travel at a very low altitude, sometimes only 50ft or so above the ground.

Some observers have said that as soon as they try to phone the police the helicopters fly off at high speed, as if they knew what the witnesses were about to do, even though they were indoors.

ONE INTERESTING FACT IS THAT BLACK HELICOPTERS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HARASS UFO INVESTIGATORS.

Some of these craft are reported to have strange appendages or devices attached to them that even aviation experts are at a loss to explain.

Sometimes they will emit a strange noise which sounds like loud static.

There's no doubt that some black helicopter sightings are connected with covert military activity, although for obvious reasons this is often denied.

However, other sightings indicate that something far, far stranger is going on.

Black helicopters are often seen hovering over areas where cattle mutilations have taken place, and few investigators now doubt that the two phenomena are intrinsically connected.

An interesting video said to have been shot in Argentina in 1983 caught what looks to be a cow being levitated into the sky underneath a saucer-shaped UFO.

No black helicopters, but quite a mystery. Well, it was until the truth surfaced.

The black helicopter phenomenon is no hoax, though, as thousands of witnesses will testify.

In the USA, only military helicopters are allowed to be painted entirely black and their presence at the scenes of both cattle mutilations and UFO sightings has led to much speculation.
