Happy Memorial Day! And today, we celebrate the legacy of Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space!

Today, we remember Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, on her birthday. Dr. Ride joined NASA in 1978 after answering a newspaper advertisementseeking astronaut applicants. Her astronaut class was the first to have women and people of color. Assigned as mission specialist on STS-7 and STS 41-G, she flew on those missions in 1983 and 1984, respectively. Two years later, she served on the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident, investigating the disaster. After leaving NASA, she taught at the University of California, San Diego and founded Sally Ride Science, a company aimed at engaging girls and women in STEM fields. In 2012, Dr. Ride passed away from pancreatic cancer.
